Haha so anyone can either delete this or move it to what ever it needs to be but I found a notch in my timing belt that's only 9k miles old but out of the shops 90 labor policy... should I sell the car fix the car or drive the car.

The notch is only surface and doesn't go all the way though but it's in between the teeth so the thin part of the belt...

It could also be a tool nick from say, holding the belt in position while aligning the cams and letting the tensioner come into tension.

It could be something mechanical, say a sharp gouge in the idler pulley.

It could be something from an aftermarket source and say, like a Continental belt from within the past 2 years, where their quality control has been pure *****.

*You meant "Passat Forums", not Passau, correct??

Haha yeah, some one else told my it's probably a tool gouge. But I took it to the shop who installed it and it's a one man crew and he said, oh I have never seen something like that. Maybe he's covering his ass, maybe he didn't it see it get slashed idk.

I have spun the belt around and it's the only gouge in the belt that I have seen

What vehicle is the belt on ?? Is it an accessory belt or timing belt ??

Me personally, I'd replace it now.

From the 2nd pic, it looks like the 'cut' has some extension out about 1/2 way across the belt....almost like a knife was drug across it, like as in maybe someone cut the package open ??

Car has 227k miles don't want to spend another 1000 on timing belt, should I off the car before it swamps me?

I'd either replace it or sell it, but don't say it has a new belt unless you disclose the knick.

That belt is weak, and it looks like the damage is more than just that nick.

See the area I highlighted in orange....looks like something sharp was drug across the belt

I'd not chance a timing belt going out on me.....replace it or sell it.

If your luck is anything like mine, it'll break at the time it will cost you the most time, effort, & money.

Yeah the guy who did it two years ago said he'd cover parts I have time cover labor, so it's about 2.5 hours of labor... so it's only like 300$ it's not to bad...

It almost looks like the shop nicked it with a tool cause that spot you highlighted looks like a screw drive mark or something? I'm wondering if he was holding tension and it slipped. I have a feeling it was like that since day one but now that I found it it will break if i push it

That's my guess... I'm going to get the shop to split the labor because it should of lasted longer than 9k miles, so hopefully I'll pay 150-200$ but at most he's charging me 300

that belt looks terrible for only having 9k miles on it. the parts are cheap. if its a 1.8/2.0 its real easy to change that belt. id do it my self for piece of mind.
