Pinging after plenum fix and wire tsb?

My truck is an 02 2500 with the 5.9 Magnum v8. I recently did the plenum kit using the Hughes plate. I have a bad ping now. No oil is getting sucked into the plenum. Also, I did the tsb for rerouting the plug wires, but it's still there.

If hear about changing out the thermostat to a 180°. How does that help? Cool down the plugs more? I did a tune up not too long ago with factory equivalent plugs. Champions.

I've done plenty of searches, and I believe I've tried everything besides the thermostat. And ideas or personal experiences?

I don't know about the 5.9. But pings are usually associated with timing being advanced too much or a lean condition., meaning vacuum leak. Good luck.. Hope someone can help...

Well, I thought I fixed the only vacuum leak I found. Yes, hopefully someone helps.

If hear about changing out the thermostat to a 180°. How does that help? Cool down the plugs more?

A 180 degree Tstat will give you a richer a/f mixture. May solve your problem if the ping is caused by too lean of an a/fr.

Also, could a clogged cat cause pinging?

Not sure about pinging, but the truck would be a dog. No power at all.

I'm not really sure how much go this truck should have to begin with!

But, I'm going to pull the pre-cat 02 sensor and see if it's any better.

I need idea for the pinging. It's quite loud driving sometimes, and embarrassing.

You might need to Seafoam it to dump the carbon out of the combustion chambers.


(You're a 2nd gen, not 3rd. :D )

Yea you are technically a second gen, might get more help over there but whatever.

What are the conditions when this ping shows up? Are you accelerating, just cruising, part throttle, wot.

And are you positive it's a ping? Not exhaust manifold leak or something like that....

Well, the 2nd gen section sends me here. You guys send me there. So I dont know where to be.

I seafoamed it before I did my plugs, wires, cap and rotor and oil. But, maybe it could use it again.

It happens only while driving. Even in normal conditions. If im easy, it doesn't do it until it downshifts into o.d. I believe. Whenever the rpms drop to about 1500. Other times it will do it above 2000 depending how hard i am.

Well I removed the pre-cat 02 sensor, and it make no difference. So I'm sure my cat is still pretty good.

I'm stuck here guys. I wanna get this fixed!

Try Autolite 3923 spark plugs and see if that helps. If you haven't replaced the front O2 sensor it MIGHT be trying to lean the fuel mixture out. You could try unplugging it, which would throw the PCM into open loop (and set a CEL) and you could see if that alleviates/eliminates it.






And yes, you're a 2nd gen because the heavy duty trucks ran through 2002 with that body style.

If you just removed the pre-cat 02 sensor and didn't replace it and it didn't change anything then that would point at that sensor not working. There should have been a big difference when the pre-cat 02 sensor was removed. It is the main signal to the PCM to control the AFR. It doesn't matter where you post although your engine and PCM is closer to the 2g rather than 3g. But technically you are a 3g because of the model year.

No, no he's not.

He's a 2nd gen. 2/3500s didn't change over to the new body style/engines until 2003.

If you unplugged it and noticed no improvements I'd be leaning toward a bum O2 sensor.

That's the point I'm trying to make, removing the forward O2s should make a big difference in performance. Meaning if there is no performance change then it indicates the O2s was not working.

As for the truck being 2g or 3g I don't really care. It is listed in my 03 service manual and assumed it had the 03 body.
