Request for help in covering chrome bumper with black bumper cover

Hi all,

I have a 2005 1500 SLT with the front and rear chrome bumpers. I received a black bumper cover which looks to have the same bolt patterns but still appears to be a few inches off from attaching over the chrome. I removed the air deflectors, and the step pad as well as the silver (color of my truck) upper portion so it was the bare metal, chrome.

I have read previously that others have simply used 12 steps and I have reviewed them but still with no avail. It's not to far off, and I think I may need to simply sand down some more.

Does anyone have or know of a step by step walk through with photos for this process?

Edit: I have also removed the fog lamp bezels to allow for the bumper cover to install. Each side is about 1/2 - 1" off.

The only thing that it fits over is the bumper reinforcement. If you're fitting it over chrome it's not right.

Thank you for that link. I was viewing that yesterday and could not find a lot of differences or a way to remove the chrome front as shown in the second picture I posted. I was told this was an all in one design and would have to get the "make-up" for a sport bumper include the backing to do the job.

Is this the case, or was I missing a few bolts to remove simply the chrome piece to allow the black to fit?

I think you'll have to get the sport bumper stuff. Which is a lot of stuff. You'll need all the fasteners as well. The nice thing about LMC is they'll tell you how many of each you need. Where do you live?

I live in Massachusetts.

I'm going to make one more attempt to fit the cover on before spending hundreds of dollars on the backing pieces and fasteners. The bolt holes line up on the cover I received, just seems that there is something in the way not allowing me to install.

You might not have a choice, I don't know. Too bad you're so far away. I have a brand new, in cardboard, bumper reinforcement.

I just had the sport cover installed on my 06, and the body shop said the cover fit right over the chrome bumper. I had an 02 sport and the metal bumper was chrome under the cover on it as well.

Maybe just a little more persuasion is all it needs then.

Where'd you get your sport bumper from? I want to get rid of that chrome strip across the front of my Laramie bumper by replacing it with the sport one and I'm not sure of the quality of them from rockauto. They do have one that's CAPA certified though
