Will a 17x9 with proper offset work?

Hi guys, a buddy of mine had picked up a 6" rough country full suspension lift kit for his '12 2wd 1500 and decided to go a different route, which landed me a rough country 6" full suspension lift kit for my '13 2wd 1500.

Now... the part that's kept me from throwing it on, have a 2500 with a BDS 6" 4-Link system on 17s with 37s. I love the look. I don't like larger wheels, personally (20+).

Straight from RC:
  • Requires 20" or larger wheels! Does NOT fit 18" or smaller wheels.
Why? I can't possibly imagine why a 17x9 -12 or with suitable backspacing in general, it wouldn't work? I have searched HIGH and LOW with no actual answers as to why it wouldn't, or confirmation on if it does for the specific parameters (4th gen 2wd RC 6" full suspension lift).

Any insight would be HUGELY appreciated. If I absolutely can't run a 17, or even an 18.... fine, so be it. But clarification if anyone has any would be greatly appreciated, as RC support only knows one word, "No".

it may have to do with the clearence for the brake system. calipers, rotor size, etc. thats a good qustion though. i have 20s. there is room in there but im not sure for 17s. oem rims were 18. not sure if they came from factory w 17s. if they did, then that would answer your question.

Not sure about 2wd and 6" lift, but it says the exact same for my 4" lift and I've run 18's for years with no problems and am currently running 17's, again with no issues.

I think it's the lift spindle itself.........mine looks pretty close with 20" wheels

That's where it gets interesting, because that was my first thought too. My thought was clearly they're saying so due to clearance issues, whether it's braking components, the spindles, etc. However, they even say an 18 is a absolute NO GO. The way they word that 20s are your only option is kinda strange, because when calling in they will tell you that a 20 and ONLY a 20 will work even with proper backspacing / offset.

Not sure about 2wd and 6" lift, but it says the exact same for my 4" lift and I've run 18's for years with no problems and am currently running 17's, again with no issues.
Any clue if that applies to co-pilot's thoughts? Do you clear the spindle with a 17, and if so by a reasonable amount or is it pushing it?

I think it's the lift spindle itself.........mine looks pretty close with 20" wheels
That's the downside and what has me on the fence about even putting the darn thing on, you ask for specifics about their specs and you get the run around blanket statement, I mean, again worst case I go with 20s I just personally don't like the larger wheel look and was excited to rid myself of my stock 20x9s

That'd be awesome, I appreciate it! I'd imagine the spindle on the 4" is identical to the 6" at the connection

Yes....on the 2wd the 4" & 6" use the same spindle....the 6" just uses spring's to get the extra 2" of lift

Not sure if Smoothee is 2wd ?

No I'm 4wd, only chimed in because it says the same thing on their site for my lift.

Not sure if this will be helpful or not, but here’s a pic of mine. 4”RC lift, stock 20” rims, and 35x12.50’s.
The first pic is with a 1/4” wheel spacer installed. Without the spacer, the tire was rubbing on the knuckle.

This pic is with a 2” spacer, same wheels and tires though. With the correct back spacing, I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t run a 17” wheel.

i know this thread is a little old but are these pics with the 17s? what back spacing do you have? i'm looking to install spindles as well, mine is 4wd with 17x9 with 4.5" backspacing (-12 offset)

Yup those are 17's, same specs you're looking to install. One thing I'll note, the beefier TTX tie rod ends wouldn't clear when I tried to install (rubbing the wheel weights)
