My 2007 1500 just developed a loud whining sound when you accelerate the truck. When coasting there's no sound at all. When you tap the gas pedal, it's pretty loud.

What would you suggest it is? I'll upload a video of the sound:

One person suggested it was a loose pinion nut. I guess if the pinion comes loose from the drivetrain, either the rear axle will lock up or the drivetrain will be on the ground.

If that's a strong possibility, would you tow it to a mechanic or would you drive it there?

Yep it's a rear end rebuild or replace. They'd like to replace it. Gonna be about $4,000 with a one year warranty. Apparently used rear axles are going up in price.
