thanks guys! Now for the dana 60's what is a good price for both front and back and what gear ratio would i wanna go with to run 38's? Found a guy not to far from me that has a set of dana 60s but not sure how much he wants for them. he thinks they are geared to 4.10. What price would you guys say be a great deal that i would be stupid not to buy them? lol

and anything i need to really look at before buying them? like any tips or things to look for?

Edit: oh and its coming off of a 96 ram, will they bolt right up to my 99?

For rear axles, your not limited to just 60's as a 70 or 80 will work the same. Gonna be based on your area but $200-$300 a diff seems to be a fair price for a used 2nd gen diff to me, depending on condition. Up here you see them listed at $650 for the front 60, though none ever sell for that price. I bought a set myself, paid $600. Id start small, you work your way up if need be. Get the BOM numbers on the axle tag and confirm what they are. Since you want 38's, Id look at 5.38 gear ratio.

Check EVERYTHING. Open both pumpkins and inspect. If it doesnt look right it probably isnt. See if oils got any kinda shavings in it. Check the coil buckets for rot, grab the pinion and see if theres any play in it. If there is it'll need new pinion bearings, cheap part lot of labor. I would def prepare to install all new front end parts on the front 60, I wouldnt leave anything thats been sitting on it whether it be ball joints, u-joints, wheel bearings, etc.

Also for 38's Id be looking into an alternate steering set-up. 08.5 4th gen T-Steering is a direct bolt in upgrade, and is a much better set-up then the stock Y. You could also look into a custom cross over set-up using older ford D60 steering.

Johnn123 very much nailed it not much to add. I think I paid $200 or $300 for my set, but I put all new unit bearings, rotors, calipers, pads, drum's, shoes, seals, ball-joints, wheel cyld. That all adds up very fast but well worth it in my books.

Agreed, it does add up quick but very much worth it. That way your not dropping your newly installed axle 2 weeks later for a u-joint or something.

LOL outta that list I forgot that the u-joints were also done. A year later for two Moog ball joints but not bad.

Think if it like this the more you pay for the lift the better its made. I have a 5'' Super lift and i hate it rides like crap and the front axle is not aligned due to crappy design. I am getting the BDS 5'' long arm lift to correct the front axle and for a better ride.

6 month old thread bud, and I haven't seen Big Red on here in ages.

5" BDS long arm is a very good kit, albeit expensive. Nice truck, just like my old 2nd gen :D

I Also have 4;56 gears with Lunch box style locker running 35" tires, but putting 37" on when they wear out. My transmission is still holding up. Amazed though!
I have a 408 Stoker motor about finished on the stand, so tranny will be upgraded soon. i have a spare to mess with. I will be running a 2500 stall converter and switching to hydro boost brakes all at the same time.
