Update: Worked ol' rig last night. Little heat, apply pressure to E-Z out, more heat, more E-Z out, and little heat, and more E-Z out, and the the threaded part of the broken vent bolt came right out. Whew! Next to change out the pinion seal in the rear axle. Still pondering on taking it to...

Hey Chopperman, Thanks! I have small torch, and a spiral screw extractor. I'll heat and cool the area of busted bolt a few times, then bust it loose. What then i may do is send some oil down the tube and let it come out the diff. I'm changing diff oil too. Some 75w-90 syn. Don't have a...

    Rear axle vent bolt

Good morning! Have '99 Ram 1500 and the rear axle vent tube bolt rusted and broke. The threaded part is still in the Axle. Any good methods getting it out? I'm thinking of little heat and eazy-out bit. Maybe little drilling to get clean bite on the eazy-out. Thanks!

Official word on overdrive and towing....

Good morning! I think I'll do both, upgrade my throttle body, and get 4.10 gears. I think a friend of mine will help me on the gears. He asked me what size of differential and type of transmission, but his health isn't the greatest. I'm not pressuring him, but left it up to him. If not...

Official word on overdrive and towing....

Hey dapepper9, thanks for the Overdrive gear! Yes, I think I'll dial it back to a 4.10, and keep my 245 / 75 tires. I just know Michigan has a minimum speed limit and my truck had a hard time keeping it, so I have to do something. My relatives have newer Chevy trucks with 3.73 rear ends but...

Official word on overdrive and towing....

Good morning! I have a '99 1500 with a 318, 46RE transmission with a very big aftermarket external cooler and check valve, 3.55 rear end, and 245/75 R 16 tires. It STRUGGLES pulling my 4k camper. I'm planning on changing gears (and all bearings) to 4.56 ratio. Its not a daily driver, but on...

In praise of my 2nd gen 1998 Ram Quad cab approaching 200,000 miles

I have a 99 1500, 318, 46RE (with huge aftermarket trans cooler) and 3.55 rear end. I've gone between Castrol and Mobile 1, both full synthetic oils. Never had an engine issue. Approaching 165,000 miles. But it struggles pulling my 4K camper, planning upgrading the rear diff to a 4.56 and all...

Hey Lyle, Thanks! I guess I should have paid more attention to what I was looking at in the threads. I found the 2nd Gen Forum, I'll hop over there. Thanks for chatting! Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas! Jody

    Gear ratio pros and cons

I have a 2 wheel drive. April 1999 manufacture date. I called a dealer with the VIN, they confirmed I have a 9.25 inch diff, 3.55 gear, and something about LD. I have a few friends that stated they'd help me with the alignment of the gears during installation. Thanks!

    Gear ratio pros and cons

Thanks so much guys! I'll order a set of 4.56 gears after Christmas, all bearings and seals, and see about getting them on by spring. Tires are in good shape, lot of tread left, so need to keep them. Merry Christmas!

    Gear ratio pros and cons

Thanks! I was leaning towards the 4.56. At first thought I was pondering 4.11, but I thought I'd go towards added insurance of pulling the camper easier.

    Gear ratio pros and cons

Good evening! Question: I have a 1999 Ram 1500, 318, auto 46RE transmission (with huge transmission cooler), and 3.55 gears. Truck STUGGLES pulling my 4,000 pound camper but I want to do more camping, mom really likes it. Should I up grade the rear gears to 3.91, 4.11, or 4.56? It has 245/75...
