If you're talking 1/4 mile times, you need to include Tire Size, and HP.

A lot of HP needs taller gears.

Little tires need taller gears.

But if you're talking a couple of bolt-ones, and stockish tires, I'll take shorter gears every day, and twice on Sunday.

I wouldn't say my truck is real high horsepowered at 435Hp and 455Lb-ft,but the taller gears were just as good in it. First gear basically becomes useless if you're making any kind of power with the 8sp trucks. A stock truck will benefit from 3.92's in most cases, especially if you're towing with it.If you're building a toy, don't overlook the 3.21's,they'll work good, and in most cases will have one less shift on a 1/4 mile pass, which makes a differance

Matt Fikac of Moes just put this up on Nadodge on facebook a few minutes ago.Don't rule out the taller gears guys, lol

He has been trapping 118-119mph and only running 11.9s for about a year now, but could never get his 60’ down. We got him into a set of smaller radials and stepped down to 3.55 gears from the 4.10s he had prior, and it finally came together. I think he still has an 11.2 in this setup though with a smoother launch and better air.

My truck is in the shop and they gave me a loaner 18 with hemi and feels like 3.21's. It was a huge, noticeable difference as soon as I got in the truck. My truck with the 3.92's is so much more snappier. Definitely glad I got my outdoorsman, if only it came with the dual exhaust.
I agree with this man love the 392 gears in my truck but the single side exhaust gives less drone when upgrading exhaust

Depends on what size tire is being ran.

^Im with InVet. A blanket statement about what gear ratio you prefer, means nothing unless you include which tranny, engine, and tire size you have. Probably wouldn't hurt to include the primary purpose of the vehicle.

If you drive your truck like a car, you'd be more likely to like th taller gears. For my application, 4.10s are the ones to have!

I have a 17 with 3.21 gears. What have guys with 3.21's done to get a little more out of the truck? I've got a CAI and exhaust on mine and it by no means feels sluggish but i would like to get as much out of it as possible.

I wasn't trying to make anyone mad......
& didn't want to go deep into how the more Hp you make the less gear you need.......just say n that a stock 1500
W/ 33'' tall tires & 3.92 gears feels so much better to
Drive as a daily driver....imo

Good evening! Question: I have a 1999 Ram 1500, 318, auto 46RE transmission (with huge transmission cooler), and 3.55 gears. Truck STUGGLES pulling my 4,000 pound camper but I want to do more camping, mom really likes it. Should I up grade the rear gears to 3.91, 4.11, or 4.56? It has 245/75 R 16 tires. Rarely use the truck, I have a car for a daily driver. Thanks so much! Jody

My buddy did 4.88 on his 2003 360 daily driver and loves it but hes on 35s. 4.56 would be bigger bang for the buck over the others and allow bigger tires with minimal power loss

Thanks! I was leaning towards the 4.56. At first thought I was pondering 4.11, but I thought I'd go towards added insurance of pulling the camper easier.

I run both 35” and 37” tires and have the 545rfe. Installing 4:56 gears on my 2011 Ram 1500 (waiting for arrival). Currently has the 3:55 which is horrid for my setup. 9” lift.

4.56 will definitely help with towing......gas mileage may suffer but if you don't drive it much it doesn't matter.

If you are running a 31.5 inch tall tire & drop down to a 30 inch that would make your 3:55 a 3.80
4.56 with 30 inch tires would be 4.88

I have the 4.88s with my 37s and I am really glad I re-geared .... I usually average 15.6 when driving around town without having fun .. right now the last 2 weeks I have been having a lot of fun and I am averaging 11.7 mpg lol ...

If you plan on going with tires over 35s go with the 4.88s ... anything else you can definitely benefit and go with the 4.56s ...

Thanks so much guys! I'll order a set of 4.56 gears after Christmas, all bearings and seals, and see about getting them on by spring. Tires are in good shape, lot of tread left, so need to keep them. Merry Christmas!

Moe’s Preformance has sets on their site that are right around $900US for front and rear including master install
Kits for front and rear. A few more dollars though if your front carrier is welded. What year you have?

Lyle, be sure and report back when you get gears done on that 2011. I always enjoy hearing from guys that have regeared.

Low rear end gears really help out the old 545RFE.

I'd love to have an 8 speed with either 3.92s, or better yet 4.10s. It'd cost me $25,000 USD and my current truck by the time the smoke cleared to get an 8. It's just not worth that to me.

I have a 2 wheel drive. April 1999 manufacture date. I called a dealer with the VIN, they confirmed I have a 9.25 inch diff, 3.55 gear, and something about LD. I have a few friends that stated they'd help me with the alignment of the gears during installation.
Thanks!

Oh a 99, I haven’t looked around for anything on those years. Should try on here in the 2nd Gen forum. Should have more info about your truck then on the 4th Gen forum. 2WD won’t cost as much anyways. Good luck with your setup!
