Have a 2005 Ram 2500 Crew Cab, Short Bed 5.9 diesel with 285,000 miles on truck, and fresh motor and tranny put in at 250,000. I pull a 35' fifth wheel that weights 13,500# and 2000# tongue weight. just purchased a superchips 3855 to gain some fuel economy and torque. I get on average 11.6 mpg towing and 21.5 highway, city is around 17.5. I haven't used the tuner yet but will this next week getting ready to take off for Yellowstone for a 1400 mile one way trip towing the fifth wheel. Any recommendations as to how to set the superchip up? I'd appreciate any help you all can give. Thanks; Martin

My experience with the Superchips tuner was only felt with the 91 octane tune.....not recommended for towing.

Advanced timing is certainly noticeable but so is heat production.

I'd go the route of custom tune.

If you are going to use the Superchips to town the 5th wheel, I would set it to either
"TOW" or "TOW PERFORMANCE"

Depending on the tuner itself, it may only have TOW as an option. It may not have TOW PERFORMANCE as an option.

I have used PERFORMANCE to tow before and its just not really recommended. It pushes alot of fuel and can cause alot of heat and can cause the Torque Converter Clutch to slip and you will feel the converter shudder. It requires you to pay close attention to everything going on while towing and when you have the 5th wheel hooked up and you just want to cruise down the interstate and chat with the wife you would rather not have to worry about what tune you have installed.

Like HemiLonestar said, there are better tuners available for the 5.9 Cummins but if it is what you want to use then more power to you.

When you first tune the truck, go drive the truck and learn the new characteristics of the truck and how the power comes in while you are empty. If you drive conservatively with the 5th wheel hooked up you wont have any problems. I ran a 2006 5.9 Cummins for 370,000 miles with a Superchips flash installed since the 3rd day after buying the truck new.
