The passenger side rear stud has snapped and I'm also getting a P0430 code and bad gas mileage. I'm considering replacing the stock exhaust manifolds with some shorty headers because they don't retain as much heat as the OEM chunk of cast iron and allegedly don't suffer from broken bolt syndrome (though I've heard they are prone to cracking). I've also heard that MPG is somewhat better with these.

What do you guys think based on your experience?

I've heard tale that people like to ditch OEM/aftermarket bolts and get some black oxide bolts from the hardware store. Is that true?

Either the bolts break or you can pull the threads out of the head. Have your existing manifolds machined flat , or take a. Belt sander to them. These have been heat cycled and will remain true now.
Long tubes give more power and work great , however they can be costly depending on the brand.

Somebodies pulling your leg, shorties or any header radiate more heat into the engine compartment then cast iron manifolds do.The only way to mininiumize the radiated heat is to wrap the headers. If you're spending money on headers, get long tubes, not shorties.Long tubes make more bottem end torque and out pull shorties all the way up the rpm scale to redline.
