Hello Everyone, the 5.7 in my 2007 Ram is blown and I found a local 5.7 for a good price. The only catch is it's out of a 2014 Charger. I know I'll have to swap the intake manifold, timing cover, exhaust manifolds, oil pain, and engine mounts. Is there anything else that I will need to swap over to make this work such as the tone wheel on the crank? I'm hoping the wire harness in my 07 ram will connect to everything without issues.

Thanks in advance!

Different engine lol. Yes you could swap the tone wheel. Are you prepared to pull the crankshaft to do so? Also you would have to lock the VVT. This is not a plug and play. Your stock timing cover will not fit the front of that engine. Recommend you find something compatible (03-08 5.7 or 6.1).

Yeah I already have the other engine torn down with the crank pulled out, so swapping the tone wheel isn't an issue. I just wasn't sure if iit was worth the hassle to lockout the VVT system. Also I think I read up that the exhaust ports were different on those heads. I can't reuse my heads as they were burned up pretty bad with the notorious 4.7 and 5.7 piston/head issues :(

I was only considering this route as I found this engine out of a wrecked 2014 Charger with 29k miles for $1100. The salvage yards want around $2k for a drop in engine

Yeah they redesigned the engine in 09. Few parts are backwards compatible.

Sounds like you wasted $1100 by not doing any research. What exactly do you mean your engine is “blown”? Unless you are talking about a hole in the block, most problems can be easily fixed compared to dicking around with swapping in a new Hemi.

well i didn't waste anything because I haven't bought anything yet. Needs new pistons and heads for sure as they are ruined. So i'm debating on just rebuilding this entire engine and having it re-honed assuming the #8 cylinder isn't damaged.

Pistons, rings, heads, bearings, oil pump all are a must, along with the other usual parts. I know everything can rebuilt to an extent but you have to factor if the cost is worth the reward. I was just simply trying to research if I can pick up this 2014 VVT engine and make it work for cheaper than rebuilding an entire engine.

It is :) i'm building 2 of them now. one for my 70 challenger, and the other one doesn't have a home yet.

There ya go then lol. Just a matter if you want to keep your MDS or tune it out completely. If you want total plug and play, use your stock heads (or better yet, fresh set of big valve) on the that block. Pick a cam, dress up the exterior with your original truck engine parts and drop her in and tune it.

I'm building the 5.7 for a customer that has a limited budget so that's why I was trying to way the cost over the different options. He can't afford the 6.1 haha.

Gotcha. Well, you can use any 03-08 5.7, be it Ram or LX but only 06-08 1500 will be straight drop in. 03-05 won't have MDS, 03 won't have EGR. The LX engines will require front cover and oil pan/dipstick change. Might widen your search parameters for a replacement.

Thanks! I appreciate the info a lot. Yeah I knew if I went older I'd have to deal with the MDS and EGR, but I didn't know much about these newer LX engines and what all changed. That one that is local is a great price but I don't think it's going to be worth the hassle. I'll keep my search for the 03 - 08, or see if the customer would just want me to rebuild this one. I figure it would be around the same cost (1500 - 2K including heads) and he'll have a whole new engine rather than a salvage yard engine with 100k miles on it.

Actually if you can do it for $1500 he'll come out ahead, that's about what you find on the low end for high mileage 1st gen 5.7's. $2000+ is the norm for one. Somehow the newer VVT engines are cheaper to get. Sucks, because I could afford factory 392's for all of my vehicles but it wouldn't be worth the hassle, extra install expense and loss of function that comes with it.
