I feel like I remember feeling this for the 2 years I've owned it, not on a regular basis and mostly unnoticeable. However during the last cpl months I've noticed a more pronounced stutter followed by clunks. Recently changed both fuel filters (they were due but also i thought it could be part of the issue). I've read about the 68RFE issues and the "its a large truck, its not gunna be smooth" excuses, however my concern is more about the increased occurrence of it as well as the more violent stutter and clunk it now shows. I recently added a K&N CAI set up which changes the filter as well as a replacement tube to remove the baffle and foam inserts. Could that have anything to do with it or is this strictly 68RFE. Should i bother with dealer?? Thanks!

I know there was a shift solenoid issue with some of the 66RFE's, don't know if it was also an issue on the 68RFE's though. I believe there was a recall for it.

Well considering ive gotten 2 recalls from FCA within 2 weeks I wouldn't be suprised....when I switched to the ERS shift control and manually went thru the gears it didn't do it

My Hemi actually stuttered really bad today accelerating at low RPM in 3rd. If it keeps doing it I'll be taking it into the dealership, even if they can't reproduce it, I want a record of the issue on file. I wasn't manually shifting when it happened.

Have you been driving your truck a little differently for the last few months with the new CAI?

Ehh...not necessarily...I'm typically a heavy footed driver and I like the pull I get from the turbo.....the first col days I had it I would pull harder at the start so I could hear the whistle...

The only reason why I asked is because my trans would do the same if I switched from driving aggressively to driving "normal". The transmission would learn from my aggressive driving and tried to shift quickly applying torque converter lockup sooner. When I switched to driving normally with an aggressive shifting transmission it would cause bucking and torque converter shutter.

The problem would go away if I continued to drive normal, but constantly mixing aggressive driving with normal driving would wreak havoc on the TCM learning. Now I just force my trans to relearn with my Autocal if it starts doing that, but I have only needed to do that once since tuning it a few years ago.

Well that makes alot of sense...I just had a baby recently and have been driving him back and forth to my mother in laws so I was def driving differently but once he's dropped off I'm back to my aggressive driving...

Yep, or tune the transmission. My Hardway tune relies on the transmissions shift logic, but my Anarchy tune not so much.

IMO - pull the K&N filter and put in a dry filter. You don’t need your turbo motor pulling that oil down into from the filter.

Torque converter is what I have always thought was happening too. The first time it happened to me the whole trushook violently. So the converter isn't unlocking when this happens?

No, it isn't unlocking because it just locked when it happens and cannot respond that quickly to changes to unlock.

I wonder if this is a programming issue or just a crappy converter. I'm tempted to go buy a new one. We have the best converter made here in Kokomo. Coan converters r made here. Have one in my 99 with the 408 and it's been solid.

While the torque converters in these trucks aren't that great in my (and many others) opinion due to its high stall speed, this issue is not necessarily the fault of the torque converter. Although the high stall speed is probably to save the trans. The TCM(transmission control module) controls the lockup and shift point depending on how you are driving and that is what is causing the issue. Even if you got another torque converter with a lower stall speed, the TCM will still control when it locks up.

You will have to tune the TCM to alter the shift and converter lock up strategies. The problems may still arise depending on the situation, but it will happen less often. The problem could always arise in situations where you let of the accelerator, the TC locks up, and you get back on the accelerator causing the truck to buck and shutter before the transmission has time to respond. These transmissions are programmed for a heavy truck duty cycle putting a lot pressure on the clutches to keep them from slipping and do not shift or respond as quick a car's transmission.

That makes perfect sense. It's always hard for people to remember that you can't always have both. These r towing machines.
