Hey Guys,

Just registered, sorry if I broke any rules, I'm doing this while I'm at work with my boss hanging around. Alt Tab ftw!

I recently bought a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 (Sport - V8 - 5.7L 345ci GAS MFI vin T type EZH - 2 valve OHV || Copied from oreillys auto parts, using the VIN #). The first week I had it, everything was great, no issues but after that week was up, things changed.

I have a major squeaking problem now, my brother is a mechanic but won't touch anything with an automatic. He's a chicken. I'm not a mechanic at all, so forgive me if I miss-spoke about something. He got under the hood, and tugged on the belt. He said it was super loose.

I need a diagram to show me exactly what I need to tighten, or if I should have a professional mechanic do it. I have extended warranty but it only covers things that don't have normal wear and tear to them. I need to get this taken care of asap, I've got a road trip coming up, and it'd give me peace of mind knowing it's fixed.

Sounds like the pully tensioner. I would start there along with a new belt.

Thanks for the response, the belts brand new. They replaced it before they gave it to me, it showed it's age pretty badly. The truck came from Alaska, and was around salt water a lot.

I would still replace it unless you feel it is good, or buy a spare and keep it in the truck. If the tensioner is failing, it could have different impacts on the current belt.

Alright. I'll do that. If the tensioner pulley is failing, I'll take it into the shop and have them fix it.

Thanks for all the help.

Wouldn't happen to have a link to instructions on where to tighten the pulley, would you? I'm hoping i can do this on my lunch break, and get back to you guys tonight. My work parking lot has no snow on it, and it's easier to work on here than at my apartment. Which has 3 - 4" of snow on the ground :(

I'm fairly certain that the belt tensioner on our trucks is a self-tightening mechanism. If it's loose then three are usually three reasons:

1> Belt is very worn
2> Wrong belt (too long)
3> Tensioner needs to be replaced.

Given what you've described, 1 is probably out and 2&3 should both be covered by where you bought it.

Here's a link to a diagram that shows where the tensioner is, it's #7:

Looks like the new belt fixed it, however I'm going to replace the auto-tensioner pulley. Thanks all!

If the new belt fixed this, why replace the tensioner ?
