I bought my ram new and selected Amsoil 5w20 with the EA filter for the first oil change. That was at 3000 miles it now has 5100 miles on it and the oil appears very dark. I had no intention of running the oil for any longer than 5000 miles because this is the amount I drive annually. Any concerns about the dark colar of the oil. Being a top notch synthetic I guess I expected it to remain amber colar longer than 2000mi. Thanks for any replies..

If you read up on how oil works, you will see way the oil is getting dark with all these new emission engines.

I wouldn't necessarily be concerned with the darkness of the oil, as long as it's smooth and liquid-like. No sludge or large particles.

Exactly...it's just the detergents holding carbon and other other icky things in suspense, thats their job. A problem only arises when people run their oils for too long and the detergents break down and can no longer hold that carbon and other icky things in suspense and they in turn are deposited onto your engines internals an/or turn into sludge.

I really don't know how high in detergents Amsoil runs their blends. But at the oil company I work for, detergents are moderately high in our blends. Ashland and SOPUS probably blend some of the highest detergent engine oils with Valvoline (Ashland) and Pennzoil (SOPUS)...

You could take a sample of the oil and send it to a lab for analysis to see exactly what's in there and get a better understanding of the life of the oil you're using under it's current conditions.
