Hey guys, just curious about different tune settings and octane levels. I think the levels are 85,87,93 on the tuner but what would happen if I used say 85 octane with the 93 tune? Am I just not going to see as much power as I would have if I put 93 octane in? I was told by an engine technician it wouldn't do any damage, but I just didn't know if the only difference I'd see was the power difference between the two octanes.

I think the tune levels are Regular-87, and Premium-93. Do not use the 93 tune with octane lower than 93.
I had the Bullydog and developed a loud tick running the 93 tune on 91 gas!
Other members can give you more technical reasons why this is bad, I just know my truck sounded bad...

Do not run a lower octane than tune. EVER!!! Bully dog doesn't have octane level
Tunes. The top tune is performance and you want to run 91/93 octane on that tune.
If you run a lower tune you risk damaging your truck.

I'm not an expert but I think it's because the higher octane burns quicker. When you run the high octane tune it changes the spark advance so running a lower octane the gas will not completely burn off causing knocks. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry to high jack this a little bit but I have a question. So currently I put 89 in my truck because I was told the hemi engine is more performance so the 89 would do it better. When I get my bulldog am I no longer going to use 89 ? You stated that the tunes it has are 87 and 93? I can't get 93 where I am. 91 is the highest we have around here.

91 is ok. But I had problems (loud ticking) running the premium tune with 91 though, it really needs 93... Consider an octane booster additive?

Which tuner are you running? The DS has all types of octanes. The BD only has 3 levels.

I'm not running any tuner yet. My bully dog is in the mail should be here Monday. I just wanted to know before I get it. A loud ticking doesn't sound appealing to me on a brand new truck. So I probably will stay away from the premium tune haha
So if I run a regular tune (never had a tuner, don't know the lingo) am I still able to put the 89 I've been putting in or should I start putting 87 in?
Not against saving some money with 87 just was told 89 is better for a hemi

89 octane with regular BD tune will work great, but don't do 87 with regular tune. Give your truck a little love! :)
BTW, the BD is a great tuner and you will love it. I had one for a year.

Okay thank you very much. I'm hoping to see some improvement, I know you don't feel much until you get a intake but I have my exhaust so hopefully I'll notice a little bit of power

Just because 89 will perform better?

So I just installed the bullydog and this is my first tuner. I played with it here and there but do not see the 3 options for premium tune regular tune etc. so is it preset to regular tune ?

You got a gas saver, regular and a premium.

Yes I did I will run it again but I was just curious
Does that mean it's not for performance ? Just saving gas ?

I believe it will add some power but the lowest setting for power. Let us know how much of a difference your tuner makes!!

I guess I didn't install it properly this time it's going through more steps so we will see. Are there two different types of bully dog tuners or just different tunes ? I'm new to this
