When Ram launched its new 1500 pickup for the 2019 model year, it took the automotive world by storm with its blend of style and substance. But one subtle feature may have given many of those owners who discovered it pause: the collection of mathematical charts and tables under the center console lid. Tucked away on the underside of the lid, right between the driver and front passenger, are rulers, wrench and fraction/decimal conversion charts, a right angle, a protractor, trigonometry formulas — even the Pythagorean theorem.

Why are all those math charts there? We spoke with Ram to find out.

I think this is extremely creative. Has anybody noticed this in your Ram pickup?

I noticed them in mine and initially wondered what they were for but didn't dwell on it.

I noticed it on the first truck I looked at. It was on the showroom floor. Nobody has ever been able to explain why it’s there. Thank you for the information. I can sleep well tonight.

I saw it on delivery day and never thought about it since. I do need to read the article you linked to. Thanks.

Yep, I have it in mine too and believe it to be the most worthless part of the Ram manufacturing process. I’m certain they deleted what used to be standard fender liners for useless calcs on hard plastic. Some moron designer should be canned as well the FCA executive who said, “What a great idea!” And you can find the name in the article...

I noticed it, but since I never owned a Ram before I just figured it was one of those things that was unique to the vehicle line; almost every long-term line has it's "thing". I have never used any of it because 1, I can't really see what's under there very well, and 2, I have my own set of tools and a tape measure in the truck all the time anyway :) .

What I *really* wish is that vehicles would go back to regular fasteners, either exposed or with small caps to hide them. I have hated hidden clips and fasteners forever, and one of the things I always miss about my old trucks is that you could see where every screw was in order to take parts off. I think the obsession with hiding every means of holding pieces in place is way over the top, and leads to a lot of the complaints you end up having with rattles and squeaks - most of them are related in some way to a hidden fastener, either missing, loose and rattling on the part, misaligned, etc. Never had those kinds of problems with old-fashioned exposed fasteners. Hell, the fasteners don't have to be junky looking either, and I think they're 100% appropriate for a truck.

I personally think out of all the easter eggs FCA put in this truck the previous 4 gens in the center console are the coolest, kinda reminds me of a “farewell”.

Too bad for these old eyes I would nor be able to read them worth a squat. It's like reading the fuse box lid, I need 1,000,000 candlewatt light, hold at precisely 32.5677* angle at a distance of 1.58874ft, tongue sticking out .875", left eye closed and right eye open at 63%
