I just got a 04' 2500, Hemi, NV4500, 4x4, with 74K miles. My question is, do I need to do the 5th gear nut fix? I'm reading all about how the cummins vibrations causes the nut to back off but this trans is so rare with the gas engines I'm not finding much on it. Also I've changed all the fluids but the trans bc it needed 75-85w gear oil...dealer wanted 27.99 a quart. I'm probably going to order some redline MT-85. The diffs and T-case took about .25-.5qt more than they called for so I'm wanting to know if I should order 5qts of the redline.

Do I need to do the 5th gear nut fix? and how many qts does the NV4500 actually take?

Thanks,

Neil

I called the guys at fifthgearrepair.com and asked if the 5th gear problem was a Cummins problem or a NV4500 problem. He said its just a Cummins issue and I don't need to worry with the Hemi. I think I'm going to operate under that assumption until I see a Hemi failure or experience it myself. As for the oil he suggested ordering 5qts.
