2017 Ram 1500 5.7 SSV Crew Cab The dome light works and has a 2-way switch, one way is white light and the other is red, but it does not work when the door is opened, and I cant turn it on with the headlight switch. Is this a setting or is something wrong or has the system been altered due to the truck being a Special Services Vehicle former law enforcement truck? The only light in the cab is the dome light in the front, and nother light that I can see. I did open the fusebox and it has a bunch of numbers with no explanation..

I'd bet the system was altered or programmed. You do not want to be lit up getting out of the vehicle in law enforcement. You do, on other occasions need interior lights. Presence of red suggests there is some sort of override.

It's supposed to be that way in police vehicles. You don't want the light coming on just because you open the door since you don't want to silhouette yourself or broadcast your movements. The switch on the side is the only way to activate it.

For everyday-use it is inconvenient not to have courtesy interior lights when opening the door.
I’m planning to install some under-dash lights for the purpose…. Guess I’ll have to ask which circuit or wire to clip-into on the left end of the dash (that’s the easiest access in my experience, I just don’ have a wiring diagram.)

Another issue for me….. I have twice walked out of the kitchen at night….to discover I’ve left the dome-light “on” for hours.
I think I need to get this thing onto the ordinary dome-light circuit.

Anyone familiar with which wire color-code i should be looking-for in 2015?

The 2013-2016 Service manuals are at this link.

Download the PDF to a PC and use Control F to word search for the circuit schematics.
Or, get AlfaOBD and remove the police lighting feature option shown in post #3.

You *may* find there is no factory dome light and what you have is independently wired. If it looks like a big puck, it is likely upfitter installed and wiring may not be to OEM color codes.

I don't claim to know all the configurations these were delivered in, though, so just a potential caution.

Thx to both RamDiver and Doc for the responses. What I’ve learned so-far is the SSV had the “puck” light standard, wired to the upfitter harness “hot-wire” circuit. I looks like I’m just going to have to ring-out that circuit, disconnect from it, and find the standard Ram dome/courtesy circuits.

Oh great. That sounds like it would be above my pay-grade, and the dealer is liable to want a bunch to straighten out - unless they happen to be familiar with the issue..

Do yourself a favour and find a small garage with a competent mechanic who is familiar with the electronics of recent vehicles.

Also consider a competent car alarm/stereo outfitter.

Or, maybe you can all research and virtually get together to share info and solutions.
