Exactly right. Diesel is oily and it doesn't dry, so it collects dirt. I have two 5-gal. fuel cans and I discern the diesel container by the dirt. The can with gasoline is clean.
One of my biggest pet peeves is the large diesel spills at pumps that dispense both gas and diesel. Don't the owners know that diesel foams and creates a hell of a mess when it overflows? Bet they would be more cautious if they had to clean up their own spill.
