Guess my 6.4 mpg

I think some believe the EVIC way to much. I can go down one hill and get 30 mpg and go right up the next hill and get 8 mpg. At the end of the day when I'm filling the tank and dividing the miles driven by the gallons to fill that is the number I use.

last trip I took - Had a nasty head wind going there for about 12- Comintb home had a Awsome tail wind doing 80- Mds was on a lot got about 18. Weather definetly plays into it

Mine is usually 1 or 2 mpg better than most because of the way I drive. I am not granny out there but I definitely don't put my foot in it from a stop unless I need to. I also let my foot off as soon as I see slow traffic & traffic lights that are red. I see too many people out there that are racing to get to a stop light! It's their gas, their brakes & all so they can what they like. I just like to be a little more conservative with my starts & stops.

I get 1-2 mpg better than my wife. I get it after she has been driving and the EVIC starts to climb within a mile.

Alot of close guesses. Ran around 65 for 3 hours (minus slowing in little towns) and was showing 17.8 mpg on evic. Got on the interstate and ran 75-78 mph the rest of the way. Alot of police activity so I didn't push it on speed.

Final evic reading 16.9

Hand calculated number 15.3


I wish I would've figured it before the interstate to see what I got at 65.

Ahh-an honest ram owner. Yes the evic is almost always off about that amount and very seldom is even close to our actual mileage.

I don't think anyone said the word lie. I think ( my opinion) some may be looking at the EVIC current mpg an reporting it. I would not think there could be that much difference from truck to truck. I do not drive like my grandmother nor do I drive like Dale Jr. I hand calculate every tank full of fuel. I always run down to 1/4 tank or sometimes a bit lower if I'm on the highway and fill to the top when I get fuel. I am pretty confident no one sitting in the drivers seat of my truck no matter what your driving style may be your not getting 19 mpg full tank average.

I don't regularly run down to a 1/4 tank unless I'm going on a long trip, but I usually go to less than 1/2 full. I was informed several years ago about the avg. mpg display on my 2006 Cummins being way off. And then I checked it. I was shocked that my HD diesel wasn't getting 24mpg's. (Just kidding of course) it was consistently off by 6mpg's.

My current truck is usually within 2 mpg's of actual. I have noticed the better it says I'm doing, the more off it is from actual.

I do not think anybody here claimed they got 18+ as a final average after fill-up. That being said though, I have done stretches of long highway doing the speed limit and the EVIC showing 20 (18+ probable actual) at times but drops like a brick the nanosecond you get off the highway.

I am like you, I hand calculate every fill up and have over 63 fill ups tracked on my Fuelly account. Total average is 14.2 with the last 10 fill ups on summer gas giving me 14.9 and with a couple of best at 15.7 MPG.

Regardless though, if I was stuck on MPG's as a total limiting factor, I would have bought a PRIUS. Having come from 2005 gas F250 that averaged 10-11 MPG's, I will gladly accept what I am getting now.

I think too many put too much optimism in their hand calculations forgetting the variables that would affect the results. I don't know the exact method the EVIC uses to calculate miles per gallon but it is logical to expect rounding depending on the floating point resolution plus the digit display rounding on the display. Also factor in the amount of fuel delivered by the pump keeping in mind they have an error of 0.3% (three tenths of one percent). Another issues is the long gas pump fuel lines, many folks will shut off the pump and then try to squeeze an extra pint from the line. A pint or two here and there will certainly distort hand calculations.

For one year, September to September to account for the temperature variations, I recorded my MPG from the EVIC and from hand calculations on my 2013 1500 Hemi. Notice in the graph how the two calculated results varied and somewhat tracked with respect to the average speed, I don't know why but I find it interesting.

In the end, the EVIC read 0.84 MPG higher than my hand calculations, well within the error percentage for reasons noted above. Based on this I think the EVIC is right on.

I did buy a Prius. They are on opposite ends of the spectrum. 15mpg vs. 46 mpg. One is fun to drive, the other is just for going to and from my office. I just like that I can get over 15mpg's in my 1-ton truck if I drive it nice. The Rams have come a long way with respect to mpg's in gas HD's since the late '90's.

I didn't buy it for fuel efficiency, but it did factor a little bit in my decision to go with Ram vs. Ford or GM.

This just so happens to be what this thread is about. It's not about towing, or air suspension, or even going up the Ike. It's about the 6.4L mpg's.

I beleive the context of the thread was the accuracy of the EVIC's MPG calculations.

With a lifetime average of almost 15mpg (hand calculated in fuelly), I'm extremely happy with my 6.4.

Granted, I'm an older guy and drive like a bit of a grandpa, but I'm really happy so far.

Oh and my evic is usually around 1mpg out (reading better than I'm actually getting)

yesterday, on the way there and back going 67 mph on the highway for about an hour my EVIC bounced in the low 19's until I got off the highway. no load at all besides wife and kid just going to a b-day party

Wow, you guys are getting WAAAAAAAY better than me. I didn't get the truck for mpg, but damn, the EVIC is showing 10.5 mpg. I'm not heavy footed either. Running 295/65r20s, 3/1 lift, 373 gears, ranch hand bumpers f/r and it's a 4x4. I was expecting a drop in mpg, but didn't think it would be this much. Truck only has 1 tank of gas through it. Hoping it gets better as I break it in. So far mostly mixed hwy/city driving.

I did notice the MDS almost never kicks in unless I'm on a long downward grade or I am 100% coasting. Also, trans seems to search for gearing a lot.

I just came from a 1500 4x4 with 4" lift, 295/60r20 tires, and 321 gears w/8 speed. I was getting 14-15 mpg with a lot of city driving. On long trips I was hitting 17-18.
