I'm nearing 36K miles on the truck, so decided it was time for a little more 'tone' in the exhaust. Pickings are slim for us 5.7 HD guys, so I went to a local shop and talked over some options, then decided on an X-pipe, dual Magnaflows and tailpipes exiting out the side in front of the passenger side rear wheel.

Here's how it turned out:

I'm super-happy with the end result. There's a little bit of drone at idle that goes away almost immediately. At road speeds just cruising along, they're about as quiet as the stock muffler unless I'm next to a barrier or wall - no drone at all. Tip in some throttle, and they have a really nice growl.

I bought some high-temp black paint, but might actually leave them bare as I kind of like them standing out a bit (they'll of course discolor over time).

At any rate, hope this helps other 5.7 folks with one possible option for your trucks.

I had dual magnaflows and an x pipe on my old lt1 trans am. Had them dumped in front of the axle. It was by far the best sounding exhaust I've ever had. It had long tube headers and no cats. It got way louder after a few months.

Id love to run this setup on the truck, but I would want to go to the rear to keep it out of the cab.

A y-pipe setup can never sound like a good xpipe one. If you dont mind what kind of labor did you have to pay? I was looking at the magnaflow catback but if I could do this for similar price I would go that way instead.

Awesome mod bud! I love it!

Similar to what i had done on my 89 Chevy Silverado. I think i used a flowmaster super 40 on it...i had the factory Y pipe and a single 3.5" stainless steel tip....sounded awesome on the throttle running up mountains towing my old wilderness Yukon 25'
C. Ahhh the memories...Lol...i used to love to listen to that small block 350 working hard pulling mountian passes at 4k plus rpm...

Its the kind of sweet music no radio could ever duplicate!:driver:

$375 including all parts and labor. The guy was great to work with (local shop in rural Central IL), and spent a good four hours on it.

I also had him fab up a tailpipe for my Cosworth Vega to match the original part (unobtanium today) - the PO had put a 'Trans Am' style tip on it that just didn't look right. That project was $150, and almost all in labor.

Looks good. I threw a flowmaster on mine and dumped it under the truck. Little too much drone but it’s what it is

So it looks like you cut off the OEM “Y” pipe and essentially replaced it with an “X” pipe correct...

Great plan sir.

Just an update after a few weeks - still loving the sound, and I’m pretty sure I’m getting around 1 mpg better mileage, too. Would normally be 13.x and it’s been in the high 14.x range over the past couple tanks.

Wow! This is great. I am in a 2016 2500 5.7 Megacab; might go to some exhaust shops in Houston to copy this design! Appreciate you sharing.
