So I was on my way to school this morning and the truck was running great. But when I got on the highway I started to feel and hear a BIG grinding sound when I let off the gas. I would coast at around 63-65 and then when I pressed the gas in again it made the sound but not AS loud or prominent.

I could only feel and hear the sound when I let off the gas or pressed the gas. Maybe a little when I was keeping a steady speed but it was mostly when I let off and on the gas.

It did that all the way until I got to school. However, when I got off the highway it didnt really do it as bad but maybe just a slight grinding at around 45mph and below. It was just on the highway that it was the worst.

Strange part is that when I pulled in the parking lot and there wasnt as much road noise and I turned my radio down, I could hear a clicking or knocking. So I rolled my window down and it was loud. Loud enough for others to hear it.

I dont think its my engine. Would that be my drive shaft U joints? Or something else. Im gonna investigate it further when I get home but Id like to hear what everyone else thinks.

Also, the breaks kinda felt like I had to press them in harder to get them to stop. Idk if thats just in my head or something to do with the other issue. Or are they related? Who knows.

Im taking back roads to get home though lol Not gonna risk getting on the highway with the problem.

Where does it feel like it's coming from? Engine trans wheels axles etc

Like right under my seat almost. Its hard to tell cause it can feel it in the peddle and in the seat. I don't think its engine. Cause its just right when I press the peddle and right as I let off the peddle. Ill have to rev the engine and see if it knocks.

Like I said its kinda like a cross between and knock and tick. Not as loud as a knock but louder than a tick.

So this is whats going on as far as pictures go. Is there supposed to be liquid dripping from the transfer case? And the tail shaft on the T case is darker than the rest. Idk if that has anything to do with this though.

And there is a dark something or other right above where the T case and drive shaft meet. Its in the pictures too.

Did you by some rare chance hit the shifter and smack it into 4 wheel drive? was there difficulty steering at all?

I live in CT, my street gets plowed last in the winter so i need my 4 wheel to get to the main road and when i hit the not snowy road i get a "grinding" "knock/tick" sound because the truck has a ton of traction now and its binding up, put it back in 2 wheel and its gone. steering is also a little tough when in 4 wheel on dry pavement!

Yeah I know the feeling. I went and checked it and its not it 4wd. Im wondering if I should get a new rear axle to I dont have to mess with rebuilding anything.

That shouldn't happen. Sounds like you're missing a tooth on either your ring or pinion gear.

Grab the driveshaft at the axle end. See if it has any play going into the differential. Merc I think was on the right track with pinion bearing.

If it is, unfortunately I have not quite enough knowledge on the Chrysler 9.25 to tell you if you can swap the bearing from the outside of the axle, or if it requires tear down from the inside. Hopefully someone else could chime in there for you.

Yeah I think hes right. He is almost always lol But there is a new axle on ebay for only 125 bucks. Not including shipping but still. That might be easier than a rebuild.

The binding and hard turning in 4wd is normal.

The grinding and clicking is not. No truck should make any kind of noise when 4wd is engaged.

I take the old 98 wheeling so noises just show up, im doing work and upgrades to it as we speak. If it were my beautiful 01 id probably have it at a dealer getting it fixed
