I was driving through Montreal earlier this week in my truck and got a TPMS warning on the dash.

I quickly pulled into a grocery store parking lot as the tire rapidly deflated and found a large hole that definitely could not be plugged, so I had to swap to the spare.

The tire center replacing my tire found a steel plate from a brake pad INSIDE the flat tire.

I must have hit the steel plate at the perfect angle to puncture my tire and pick it up inside.

I pulled this out of my tire a while back. Only the flat side of the screw driver tip was sticking out. It was that deep. Was just barely able to pull it out with the vice grips. I don’t know how it didn’t puncture the tire. Guess that’s the upside of the heavy 10 ply tires we run. I can’t imagine if the whole thing had penetrated to the point it actually would have ended up inside of the tire. Crazy.

The guy who rolled my tire away said he thought the TPMS sensor was broken and rolling around inside. He came out laughing about what he found inside, I think this was a first for him.

It was definitely a first for me!

I can't imagine how I would have felt pulling that Phillips bit out though... that would have been freaky.

These examples are choice ! Closest I can come is when my wife called me while picking our daughters up after school. She thought she heard a sound like a dumpster lid banging shut, and suddenly her rear tire was flat. It wasn't too far from home, and I came and put on a spare for her.

I took the tire in to see if it could be patched, and when the shop called they told me "It's not fixable, but I think we can get you a new one under road hazard". When I picked up the tire they explained that they had removed what was left of a shell casing, and they handed me the bullet they recovered from the old tire. It was a hollow point, not much deformed, so my wife must have driven over some deer hunter's lost cartridge. Whether it actually went off or not I can't say - but it was an interesting souvenir.
