I originally put this in the diy section, but I'm hoping this Section will provide more fruitful resolve.

I'm rather new to painting (first attempt, yup, that new) and quite happy with the color/outcome, but I noticed the edges have slight "burring." I first assumed I waited a tad long to remove the tape, but the paint isn't actually coming off. Once it completely dries is there a polishing/sanding that will clean up the edges? FYI, the top of the fins, now painted, were like a metal strip so nothing plastic (not sure if that determines what's best to use polishing/sanding wise).

Thanks for any info :D

*Yes, I Searched, but the painting info I found was based on painting plastics.

Well done! When I saw the title of this thread I was expecting to see something that looked like ass. You did a great job, it looks great. I'm not sure you need to do anything else to it.

That came out good! I see what you're saying about the rough edges. I wouldnt worry to much about it seeing how when its mounted you wont notice it.

I don't see it. All I see is the texture of the black powder coating.

Appreciate the positive responses. Basically this was my test because I knew if I messed up it wouldn't be seen anyways (the differential pan will be next and is visible...I'm nit picky lol ). I just need to know what kind of sanding (grit) can be used to smooth/polish without actually stripping away the paint, which should also clean up the edges?

I'd say wet sanding with a real high grit, 3000 or so. Then polish to get rid of the swirls and scratches

Awesome, thank you very much. is there anything specific I am better off using to polish? Sorry for the questions, just can't find the appropriate answers :)

Polish after the fact? Wetsand it, clear it, wetsand it again... repeat until you get the desired effect. Then let it dry, wash, wax, and polish like you would your truck.

Here is a before and after of my valve cover with wetsanding and clearing:

Before:
You can see the tape lines/imperfections clearly:

After:
You don't see any of the imperfections anymore!
