Cannot officially pull the trigger.

I paid for a topper cap, Jason brand they had sitting on the shelf and eager to get rid of for $400, and it is sitting at the painters ready to be changed from gold to charcoal gray.
Photo of my color truck, only mine is 2500 with slightly longer box:
CHUCK'S TRUCK ACCESSORIES

Problem is, I am not sure if I want a cap or if I want this:
TruXedo Deuce – First and Only Soft Roll-up, Hinged Tonneau Cover Combination

Cap will help with fuel economy for towing and add about 300# to the bed for traction, but will be limiting for tall loads.

I honestly do not know which way to go.

Could use some advice.

I like tonneau covers but don't get it thinking you will be getting much better gas mileage.

It is a diesel.

The only area it can be helped is by pushing air up over the top of the bow/windshield of the boat, and down the sides.

The Durango I pulled it with did about 3mpg better then my Cummins. Obviously, the Cummins does it far better, but gets only about 9mpg while that Durango that pushed air over the top did about 12mpg.

Plus, I want to do that removable carpet and I am afraid the tonneau will let water in and will make it too hard to care for. Of course, the last tonneau I had was one of those kinds with snaps........:flipthebird:

On my last truck (2008 F150) I had a Truxedo QT and it never let water in. Was a nice one IMO and would like to get another someday.

Backflip!!

Not going to happen.

#1 they are too much money.
#2 not being able to see a load in the bed would drive me crazy.
#3 I have a hard time believing they would be very useful with the amount of snow/ice we get where I live. Maybe I am wrong, they just seem like they would be a pain in the winter.

I am leaning more and more towards the Truxedo after watching the wife drive out of the drive in the truck tonight.

I've had the cap, and the fiberglass lid. I haven't had the tonneau, just for the fact that I have not been able to trust them. I go with the cap, just for the fact in the fall and winter, I can stow my hunting gear (sans firearms naturally) in the bed and secure it. I do not have the side windows on my cap, and didn't when I had my previous truck. The lid style cover limited the size of the load one wanted to carry, and when the release mechanism went bad, it sucks to be you to get it to work. I'll stay with the cap.

You pay your money and take your choice.

I had a roll up tonneau and it worked very well. It was an Access Lorado.

Thanks, guys.

I am more confused what I want now than before I wrote this out. LOL :D

Painter who has the cap at his shop called today and told me to either get it done or have the cap place pick it back up. [sigh] Decisions, decisions, decisions.

It really depends on what your needs are. If you're someone that need to regularly store things in the back of your truck like tools, gear, etc, then a cap might be best or needed. Some people like to keep tons of hunting gear in there for the whole season, etc.

If you don't keep a lot in the bed and just want to be able to keep things dry and hidden when you do put stuff back there, than a tonneau might be best.

Personally, I've had both and would only have another cap if I had a real need for one. For me, the cap got in the way of easy access over the sides of the bed making me have to crawl in from the back for everything, reduced visibility, Made the sliding rear window useless for air flow and a ***** to clean, and made it tough for big items.

With the tonneau, I can keep things dry and hidden when I have stuff back there and have full easy access to the bed at all times.

Another option you might have is to get the cap at that cheap price to resell if you think you can for a profit.

I went with the cap due to my business. I love it. Yes there is a height limit on what you can haul but for me i'm not hauling anything really tall that often. I went with a bed rug and I love that too. Easily removable, washable etc. When I bought my cap there was a deal going for free carpet on the top and sides of cap and it ended up matching the bed rug perfectly. I was never a fan of caps until I put one on my 3rd gen, had to do it on the 4th gen too. It does change the "pick-up" truck look though. $400 is a great price.

I got a very cheap (about $200) trifold tonneau for golf clubs etc. to be covered while on the road. I do a road trip with my buddies for regular golf trips out of the area. I can't imagine not having it at this point. We go over the mountains and have snow the whole way, then drop down into the sunshine for the weekend. Couldn't take the truck in those circumstances without it.

It comes on and off very easily, about 5 mins. so I still have the full bed for when we have to make pallet size deliveries for my business. I leave the clubs in there all summer and don't have to worry about them at all. Not truly secure, a knife could cut it open of course.
It stood up to this last winters weather with no problems, and I think it looks good too. I clean it every now and then with Megs leather and vinyl cleaner and then seal it with a spray on.

If you never needed the full bed, then I'd say the hard cover would be the better choice for security etc. but I would have bought an SUV if I never needed the bed, lol.
