Hello folks, just signed up here and my first question involves tires. Winter time's coming and it's time for some new rubber, but for the life of me I just can't decide what I should get.
My Ram is currently (and indefinitely) my 4 seasons daily driver. About 90% of my driving is on the highway, but I live on a very VERY nasty gravel road covered in 3/4 inch rock. This one mile stretch of hell has claimed more tires on various vehicles than I care to count. At the moment, I'm spinning a set of 4-ply Goodyear Wranglers I bought with rims a month ago and so far I've had to patch two of them due to punctures in the tread from the nasty rock on this road. As a side note, my dad has also run Goodyear Wranglers on his '03 Ford Expedition and he had all 4 of them patched, 3 of which were due to the rock, before buying a new set. The plow truck we used to clear this road in the winter ('00 F-350 Super Duty) had 10-ply Duratracs, but once again the rock punched a hole in one, this time in the sidewall.
Bottom line is although most of my driving is on the highway I really need a tire that can handle nasty gravel road conditions because this is where I keep damaging tires. I totally don't care about ride quality or road noise, I just want a tire that can handle the worst of road conditions while providing adequate performance for 4 seasons weather.
My budget for four tires is around $1,000, though I'm willing to go more if the tires in question are worth it. I'm also spinning 17" rims from an 03 Ram.
