Hello All, My name is Marty from New Mexico. I just bought a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500. 5 Speed V-8 5.2 2WD. I have been a die hard Chevy Fan forever. And had a good buy I can't refuse. Bought her for $3200. Looking for cheap mods to do first since I have a poorish income. I sold my Chevy Colorado for this and so far I am pleased. I will be learning from eveyone and gaining as much knowledge as I can.

Welcome to RF! It's always amazing seeing people from New Mexico. I think you're the 4th NM member.

First modification I'd make is a good once over. Plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor (good brass contact stuff) but before that a full SeaFoam treatment.

Peak through the throttle body (truck off) to see if it's all oily / nasty inside. If so, you need to replace the plenum gasket, fairly simple process, but takes quite a while.

You've found a great source for info here. Welcome again!

I just did the oil change to part synthetic I am going to full next oil change. Cleaned throttle body. And did the SeaFoam through the Vaccum line on the throttle body.

You're on the right path! Be sure to run plain jane copper core plugs in it. Non of that fancy platinum or iridium crap.

For a truck with 141K miles It doesn't even hiccup. It feels different when i can break the tires loose now. My last truck wouldn't do crap. It would play in mud and only got stuck once. I did most the work on the last truck myself. Was really fun. Just want a V-8.

Welcome! Let us know how far into modifying you want to go! Here are some recommended mods for ANY Mopar engine: CAI kit, 180 stat, Fastman throttle body, Amsoil, and NGK V-Power spark plugs. (NOT Iridium or Platinum, like was also cautioned against above.) Expensive plugs are just expensive plugs. The NGK V's are $2 and change versus the $7+ for Iridium. For your year, the V's are great. I've had 5.2, 5.9, 4.0, 4.7 and 6.1 engines all run well on $2 NGK's.

How much is the Fastmab Throttle Body. I know by doing a few mods I can get 20mpg.

I could get 18 out of my Ram on the highway cruising around 70 MPH. I had an intake, replaced the factory muffler, and an E-fan. Pretty regularly too.

(It was a '99 Ex cab short 5.2 5sp 2wd, fairly similar!)
