I have been trying to find new valve covers for a 2001, and they don't seem to exist unless I want high end types?...Are these just not available anymore?...

If not, can anyone direct me to a source that can tell me the best way to clean the ones presently on the vehicle?

Thanks in advance...

You can buy the aftermarket plastic ones on ebay for not that bad of price.

Clean old one? Buy some engine cleaner/degreaser. Without a picture, would be hard for anyone to actually say how to clean it.
Unless it's damaged or rusty, simple degreaser, wipe it all down. Make sure no gasket pieces on either side.

First i would try a plastic scraper if it is crusty dirt
Simple Green mixture & cheap parts cleaner brush

Don't use a degreaser that would eat up the gasket material

examples of replacement covers
