Price all depends on the shop. I've got a buddy with an '08 Z71 and was quoted $2400 front and rear. That was just him dropping the truck the truck off and picking it up when it was done

Like I said man, price depends on the shop. We've only got one deducted 4wd shop in town that's worth taking a truck to so he doesn't have any reason to come down on prices

If it just the rear,

then gears - $242
new lsd - $437
labor - $300-$500

Not cheap, but not $2400

Plus that may not be the issue. Jack the rear up and spin it and listen, or just drop the pan and see whats going on in there. be real good if we had a sound clip too. Could be and exhaust hanger is loose and rattling or your muffler is toast and only cost you $10-$50, had that happen with one of my setups on an older truck, muffler baffle cme loose and rattled like a chain being tossed around. swapped mufflers and it was fixed.

^^ This. Don't assume it's the rear end is shot because someone said that's a possibility. That's a worse case scenario

^all very true sorry to jump the gun on that being the mostly likley thing. Maybe have the truck running while in park and shake the bed to see if the sound is duplicated, or have someone move it around in the parking lot to see if you can pin point a location.

Yeah, didn't think about exhaust. Didn't mean to freak him out sayin the rear, I really hope its not.

It very well could be the diff going out and you shouldn't rule that out by any means. BUT that sound could be coming from somewhere else and it may be a whole lot cheaper than a new diff or it could be a whole lot more expensive. You wont know till you start going through and diagnosing it.

k good.....its not the rear end.......bad, its the left rear axle bearing. put the truck on stands, put it in gear, no noise from the diff, left rear sounds like a metal scraping, took caliper and rotor off, still grinding, called dealer. same conclusion. so my rear end is good, but because of my rear end the c- clips need to come out to remove the axle and replace the seals. any one have a ball park on how much it mite be, this blows, but at least the diff is ok

The hub is on the very end of the axle. It might have the sensor for the abs and it'll have the wheel studs mounted on it.
If it's the hub, you could do it yourself in an hour or so

axle bearings are cheap and easy to replace.. pull axle from that side get your slide hammer out and pop the old one out put in new bearing and seal and re install axle... can be done in about an hr

I checked and O'Reillys didn't have a part number for a rear axle bearing. Just the hubs...
