So the old lady and I are pretty minimalist for camping. About to get a tent on wheels with a small fridge. I wanted something bigger but she wants something she can manage with her Tacoma with the kids when I happen to not be able to go. Plus she didn't want a shower or toilet, or pooper poop-on as the boy child calls it.

of all of the things my 2500 has and will pull, this thing is going to be really hard to see out of my rear view and towing mirrors, a whopping 10 ft and 1100 lbs.

stop laughing....

My friend hate to break it too you but its called OVERKILL.
Your 2500 pulling that pop up will look like a tick on a hippo's ass.:roflsquared:
You could let the wife tow it with the Tacoma, and you could haul your brand new 40' cabin cruiser.

Bear ****. That's what you gonna be. I had a tent trailer. Never felt safe. Get to fold it up wet in the rain. Open it, close It, open, close, etc.
Taco could pull a real trailer.

On the odd chance your family had to go camping without you, couldn't you and your wife switch vehicles? "Kids" means more than one so the bigger they get, the smaller the pop-up gets. Factor in a rain day where you are trapped inside all day with bored kids more room would be nice. IMO:)

She already hates driving my truck when we go out and, one reason or another I can't drive home. But she feels safer in the ram vs the Tacoma on weekends out. I just have to remind her the drunk is INSIDE the vehicle too.

Kids actually are going less and less, so its really for just us. I still have a preference for an 18 footer I've been looking at, but this is what she wants. I'm hoping not too lose too much in a year or two when she finally decided I was wrong to buy the tiny pop up

She already has issues not hitting things with just the Tacoma. Add another 20 ft and an articulation and I fear for the public's safety. I actually put a Damello off road Baja bumper on the front. I've had to replace too many OEM bumpers not to

I think you are required to leave your testicles at home when you tow a pop up behind a 6.4. Really, though, Jimmy68's post #8 has a lot of legitimacy to it. In the heat of summer or chill of winter, your wife will be much happier in a traditional travel trailer. Rainy days in a soft sided pop up? No thanks. Unless stored properly you may get some bad smells if it is damp. I would try to at least convince her to look at some good used 18'era and you will find they are close in price to a new pop up and won't take up that much more space.

Yeah I've stayed in rv's before that had a tent end, not fun. In the morning the inside of the tent had condensation on it. If I were you OP I'd get a small stick and tin trailer for your family.

This unit would be good for you. Amerilite Floorplans - Ameri-Lite travel trailer, camper, RV, ultra-light trailer | Gulf Stream RV

It's only 21' long bumper to ball, and weighs 2700 lbs. Has a queen bed up front and bunks in the rear. I'm not sure what floorplan you're looking at, but stepping up to the stick and tin you'll get a full bathroom (not a wet bath), you'll always be dry, WAY easier to set up (Opening that jayco up and closing it will get real old quickly.) You can leave all your camping stuff in it, ex. sleeping bags, pots and pans, coffee maker, etc so all you need to do is hook up and drive away. Your holding tanks are much bigger, and it'll be actually easier to back into a campsite.

You won't notice the weight behind either truck. Some dealers will even let you hook up to an RV so you can see how it feels behind your truck. Take your wifes truck and give it a try.

Price wise they're about the same. US dealers list this floorplan for under 12K new.

Man, growing up all we had has a pop up camper. We could go anywhere with that little thing. On the Powder River, Fallon Creek, Yellowstone... if there was a dirt track we pulled it.

At night it could get chilly, and of course in the heat of the day it could be hot. But we always parked it in the shade and when the entire thing opens up to be a screen it really doesn't retain heat. Any breeze passes right through. But we didn't spend much time inside. We were out fishing, exploring, enjoying nature.

And it was soooo easy. It didn't have a black tank or grey tank. Just fill it with water and go, drain it on the way home. 15 min and we were ready to go for a weekend.

I think this is exactly what the wife is going for. She grew up with one of these mini pop ups and had a blast with her family. Keeps telling me how fun it will be. I think that's why she's insistent on no toilet, no shower in the pop up. We do a lot of 2 wheel tent camping in the summer, she gets on her Can am and I'm on my VFR so she's definitely used to that. Lucky for me, none of the local RV shops have any in stock right now. So I've been walking her through the nice 20-26 footers, "just for a look". I can always hope can't I?

You have to do what's right for you; I hope you guys enjoy the hell out of it.
If you're not worried about bears or condensation, that'll pull behind the Taco with little drop in MPG.
