Questions on a '99
Looking at a '99 extended cab w/ 5.9 diesel. I've had 2 of the 6.7's but never had a 5.9. The owner says it has a 5" exhaust and is pretty loud. I don't want loud. Can I just buy a different muffler to quiet the truck down a bit? Expensive?

Also, it has the 4.11 gears. How bad is this going to be on the highway? All of the diesel trucks Ive ever owned seem to run really well at 70+ mph and really just kind of 'lumber' along without much strain at all. Will this thing be screaming at 70 w/ these gears?

thanks for the help.

4:11 isnt going to be the friendliest thing on the highway. As far as a 5" exhaust it depends on how much of the kit is on it - Ive seen everything from everything possible being 5" to people sticking a 5" tip on the tailpipe and calling it good - only way to really tell how much is going to be needed is crawling under it

This '99 is going to be WAY louder than the 6.7 you are used to.
Just the engine noise itself is WAY louder than the common rails.

I had a bullydog 4" turboback on my '95 Cummins, it had a good note, but was FAR quieter than straight piped. I think pretty much any manufacture out there makes a good 'quiet' muffled system. Unless you're running a hot tune, injectors n turbo, I'm not really sure that you'll have any need for a 5" system.

Aren't the 99 a 24 valve & the 95 a 12 valve? The 24 valve is quieter than the 12 valve as I remember. But a 5" straight exhaust either way will be loud.

Quieter but still a lot of engine clatter compared to 6.7
A whole new exhaust isnt all the expensive, $300 and up typically

4.11s will be over 2k over 70
