Howdy all,
I actually joined Ramforum many years ago when I bought my 2014 2-door Sport in 2016, but I wasn't very active. She was a great truck with very few problems, other than the exhaust manifold bolts, and I drove her until about a month ago when I hit a ten-point buck. It was a known deer crossing and I wasn't driving fast but suddenly there was a deer on my windshield, the truck shut off, and I was surrounded by white, powdery bags. I wasn't injured, except for my hearing. Those airbags are LOUD! I'm still mourning the loss of "Black Betty"; she only had 110k miles, a little fender rust (which I was going to replace with a pre-painted fender, and was just peppy as all get out.
But she's gone (totaled) and now I have a 2017 quad cab Sport. I have a thread here talking about its paint code misprint, but I have a lot more to say. It's more of a "project" than I had anticipated but "Big Betty", as she is now known, has good bones, low miles (67k) and was priced right, which I am now understanding why. Piecing together bits of information and inspecting the truck, it seems to have been a rich kid's mudding toy. Fine, but would it have been that much trouble to spring for the undercarriage spray at the automatic car wash? Lol. The frame (and everything else underneath) is "rusty" but not "rusted", so I've spent the last couple of weekends underneath with a large wire brush, air hose, and a pile of cans of fluid film (and eye protection!). I'm kind of half-arssing it, not knowing what I was getting into, but it should get me through the winter, which has already begun here in central Illinois. Nah, half-arrsed isn't quite right. I'm being thorough but inefficiently. Had I known, I would have had a better plan of attack.
The weird thing is, I test drove this thing about 8 miles to a parking lot, laid underneath and poked around, listened for the Hemi tick (when it was cold), etc., etc. But it was brilliantly sunny and really impossible to clearly see underneath, and I was too focused on the low miles and decent price (am I allowed to say? $24k)
There are some electrical gremlins that didn't show during the test drive, and I'm assuming it's because the front wheel wells had big chunks cut away, allowing rain and whatnot to spray into the engine bay. So I'll have a look at the relay box and see if that needs replaced, and go through all the electrical connectors and give them a good cleaning. Why would someone cut away the wheel well liners instead of just removing them to do whatever needed done? (I'm assuming exhaust manifold bolts)
Oh well, I like saving neglecting and abused things; computers, electronics, animals, whatever needs tlc. And this truck seems worth saving. Like I said, she's got good bones and the exterior and interior are immaculate and the original owner (I'm the 2nd) sprung for some fancy stuff like leather, vented seats, the Alpine sound system, dark tinting, remote start, and all the extras. I just wish we weren't going into winter
Talk more soon, I'm sure.
-Mac
PS: two weeks after buying this truck, I almost hit another deer! The exact same spot and another dark, early morning, but this time I was going about 30 mph instead of 50 (country blacktop). That would have been a difficult conversation with the insurance company.

Welcome back.

You might want to consider a new SOP of always slowing when passing through this known deer crossing. I live in a rural area too, and have a few spots where I slow down more often than not, especially at dusk or nighttime.

Are you kidding?! I won't go over 30mph in the spot anymore, less if it's dawn or dusk. Traffic backs up behind me but that's fine. The spot where they jump out is covered with a soft, deer-colored foliage about two feet from the road. Why they let that grow at a known deer crossing is beyond me. Maybe I'll take my cordless weed whacker with me on Monday :D
And something I always forget is that a car with those bright blue headlights was coming at me when I hit the deer. I wouldn't have seen it even if I was driving 20mph.
I also just got the deer whistles I ordered. I'm hoping I never have to test them, lol.
I put in a few more hours of work on her this morning. I'm feeling much better about this purchase.

You might be surprised at the number of drivers who recognize the risk and yet fail to adapt. LOL Something about assigning the blame to something they can't control.

I've been using lightly colored yellow-tinted lenses for the past couple of decades. I've tried many sets over the years, and the best-performing to me seem to be with the lightest amount of tint.
If they have too much coloration, they don't pass enough light for good visibility in the dark patches.

With the advent of most vehicles using LED, I won't ever drive without sunglasses or yellow lenses in flat light or darkness. I try to avoid looking at oncoming lights, but accidentally catching a glimpse has almost no effect while wearing the correct glasses.

For those who wear prescription glasses, it can be more challenging to locate suitable yellow lenses, but not impossible. The person who introduced me to this idea wore glasses with yellow lenses on top.

Most of my driving is on dark and unlighted rural highways. For driving in urban centers, deeper colored lenses would likely function great to kill headlight glare.

Oh my gosh, my wife has a pair of "as seen on tv" yellow anti-glare glasses. They're fugly so she packed them away. I'll try them Monday morning. Thanks, dude!

As long as they're not too deeply tinted, they work great.

Do your best to not look directly at any oncoming lights. I try to look away sometimes but with my current lenses, it doesn't bother my eyes too much.

Good luck and I hope you discover a working solution.

Oh, I have a working solution. I'm retiring in 4 weeks. :happy160: So no more 4AM wake ups and driving in the wee hours. 17 years I've been taking the same route and never seen a deer at that crossing. And then two in as many weeks.
This is another reason I need to DIY this truck into a solid, dependable machine, and I think I'm well on my way. I went over it with a fine toothed comb today and found and repaired a few postage stamp sized spots of surface-only rust on the exterior. Took them down to bare metal, primed and panted them. The touch-up paint match wasn't great but it'll do. The front driver's fender, down where it bolts to the cab in front, will need a patch or a whole new pre-painted fender. The cab surface it bolts to had surface-only rust, so that was good news.
I'm not a body man but I can patch and weld and bondo. It's the painting I can't swing.

Amber at night is the type of glasses I wear on the motorcycle. I do a ton of night riding during the summer in Montana. Amber or clear, clear you get blinded, but Amber cuts most of the glare. If you're looking for Amber glasses, check out motorcycle glasses, from 7eye./panoptic

As to deer, if you live in Montana and haven't hit a deer/antelope or other wild life, think moose. Well your are not really a Montanan, as I have been told. Those big cattle/brush guards really help with deer control. I have a buddy that has hit 13 over the course of 5 years. Same truck, same bumper. Course it's hand made out of really solid steel. He just paints it on occasion.

Well now I know where I'm NOT moving to for retirement, lol. I hear it's quite beautiful up there, though.
I've seen those bumpers for sale but I was curious how they work with the airbag sensors. I'm almost positive my airbags went off too late anyway. I clearly remember hearing a loud thud, seeing a deer covering my windshield, and then the airbags deploying, all within a half second, but still. If they were that late, then they didn't need to go off, and they didn't need to total my truck.

Whatever the challenges, for some folks, nothing beats Montana. Others might find it harsh.
Harsh maybe, but I hear very dark, clear skies for amateur astronomers like myself. Hard to find dark skies these days.

Dark for sure in the country. Into photography since I was a boy, beyond Lunar, I lack the patience.

Like I said, I hear it's beautiful! The wife and I like winters, although here in Illinois, lately that's meant ice. Lots and and lots of ice. Growing up here it was always snow. Good heaping storms. The ice started about pandemic time. A lot of things changed (for us at least) during that time.

I have a long way to go before I'm ready for astrophotography. Mostly I'm a direct-observation guy. But I like a good comet. This is Tsuchinshan-Atlas, about this time last year.

Deer whistles where a big deal around here years ago, haven't seen them for 20 yrs.
I never had to try them out when I had some on my 1960's Chryslers, can't hurt.
Dad hit a pig in 1957 and it wiped out all the under car stuff.
It was dark and head lights where coming at him.
Sounds like you need some high blocks and a good pressure washer,
It was still washing out side yet around here.
Very few trees here is a big help.

BTW I have a pruning blade for my Milw. cordless rep. saw , works great on small stuff. They make a nice cordless chain saw, but it is way too much$$

Yeah, i should have pressure washed the undercarriage before I started weatherproofing. Live and learn. Next year I'll start with that.
I realized this morning that there is no radiator support cover so I ordered one. And the hood blanket was hanging by two pushpins so I got that secured. The front hood corners had some bubbling paint which I was hoping was just surface rust. But the weird thing was, when I ground it down, there was no rust, just bubbling paint. I went all the way down to the metal and no rust. Both spots were about half a postage stamp in size so a little touch up paint and all is well.
This truck is a little like my house. The previous owner sprung for all the fancy add-ons but never addressed the basics, beyond oil changes and the like.
I also finished Fluid-Filming the frame and rocker panels today.
This truck and I have spent a lot of time bonding the last few weeks so she's growing on me :)

Lol, several people have asked me that. I didn't know it was an option. If I had been thinking clearly, I would have grabbed things from the truck for the new (to me) Ram, like the spare tire (a full size real wheel and tire), the full tank of gas, etc. Honestly, when they towed it away I had no idea I'd never see it again. I'm 63 and this is my first accident. Plus the truck started and drove just fine and had no leaks. Other than the air bags destroying the interior, it was all just plastic grill and headlights that needed replaced.
Since hitting the dear, I almost hit another in the same place, and most every morning there has been a family of five or six hanging out by the road there. Something must have changed geographically.
Anyway, I'm getting the '17 whipped into shape before the snow starts. Weird stuff like the radiator cover was missing, the front wheel wells were chopped up, and the undercarriage was covered in mud. But we're getting to know each other and I'm kind of liking having a back seat :peace:
