Helllo All,

I am shopping around for Gen III Hemi 5.7 donor (2006 - 2008) for an engine swap for a 2005 Jeep Wrangler. I have been reading and following threads on this forum for a year now as I prepare for the project. I have come to a question that I know folks here will have good answers to. So I will give you a quick summary of the build plan, and then the question.

Plan:
  • 2006 - 2005 Hemi 5.7 from a Ram truck or Durango.
  • 2005 ECM flash (this will be compatible with the Jeep)
  • Comp Cam 260
  • Better valve springs
  • Rebuild kit (nothing too special)
Question 1: With that plan in mind, is it worth it to pay a premium for an engine with <75K miles, or spend a good deal less on an engine with 150K+?

In either case, it will be a running donor. It appears that I can find a higher mileage donor for about half the price. Since I am planning to tear it down and freshen it up, does the mileage difference make a big difference?

Question 2: Suggestions for rebuild kits?

Any block from 03-08 will work, they are all identical. If you are doing a complete rebuild I would have a cleanup overbore done at a machine shop to give you a good clean bore. Replace the cam bearings also. If you are doing that then the mileage shouldn’t matter, but good machine work goes a long ways

Thanks. I am leaning towards 06-08 to avoid dropped valve seat issues. Thoughts?

Any recommendations on rebuild kit brands?

You can have a machine shop check your seats. Mine put them in their oven and over heated them to see if any fell out. Mine were good, but they would have replaced anything that was bad. The seats normally only fall out when the heads over heat. And 06 seems to be the really bad year anyways. I don’t have any recommendations on a “rebuild” kit, I basically pieced together stuff. I went with a melling 362 oil pump, picked up a nice timing chain set, and used mostly fel-pro gaskets. A lot of the bolts inside the engine are yield to torque and will need replaced if removed
