I have to park my Ram on the street most days as I can't block my other rides in the garage. We have had a rash of punk kids vandalizing cars in the neighborhood. I am looking to hook up security cameras and have leaned towards motion detection ones. That way I don't use up hard drive space recording deer wandering into my yard.

For those that have experience in this arena, is it worth it to get motion detection aimed at the street knowing it will record cars/people going by? At least it wouldn't be recording dead space, and the sensitivity can be adjusted. Or, should I bite the bullet and get 24/7 coverage with a bigger hard drive?

Arlo has a truly wireless motion detection system that runs off of batteries.

I've got a handful of D-Link cameras set up around the house. They use wifi but you need to be within 6ft of a power plug or run an extension. Mine are day/night and I have some set to send still images to my email and give me a push notification when they sense motion.

You can set it to sense motion only in certain areas of the whole viewing area. So like my front door camera points out to the road; I don't care if cares are driving past, but I do care if someone comes up the sidewalk, so only that area is selected and it totally ignores the street.

$35 or so on Amazon for the DSC-932L, and you can go more expensive from there to add HD, cameras that move, etc.

I ended up getting an 8 channel system for 24/7 monitoring. Now, to catch the little punks.

Hope you get them. I have a 4 channel that recordes continuously and it also has a motion detection setting so this way I will be notified whenever it detected. The nice thing is it allows me to set the motion detection in specified areas by dividing my screen up into a checkerboard and I slept what squares to monitor

I'm glad you asked about this. I've been debating a security system for the exterior of my house too. I've had no idea where to start looking or what kind of price range I need to be in.

If you don't have the know how or patience for running the cabling through the attic/down the walls like me, it is best to hire it out. Install quotes I received for an 8 channel system was $1600 through $3000. Companies like Vivint and ADT require 3.5 year contracts, which is about the same cost if you bought your system and paid for the install.

I should just be like Morgan (TWD) and sit upstairs with a rifle.
