I got a 2014 automatic. It my first auto. My bad habit from driving standard is to leave it in gear to park. Then it would put its self into park before I can get the key out.
This got me to thinking what happens if I need it in neutral? I played with it a bit and couldn't get it in neutral with the truck engine off. Pulled out the owners manual and looked up towing. It says it has to be flat bedded only if towed.....
Question:
How the hell would a dead truck get into the flat bed with the transmission locked in park?
And why would the auto makers make it impossible to use it with out the engine running?

If the truck is dead, good question. I would imagine you would need to get it jump started at least. Does your truck have this button?

A friend of mine said there is a panel tow trucks drivers use under the dash left side under the wheel that puts the truck in neutral

I know this is a couple of weeks old, so hopefully, you found your answer. But, on the lower left side of your dash, I believe it's right about the parking brake lever, there is a panel that you can remove. Behind that panel, there is an emergency lever/pull cord type of thing that you can put the transmission in neutral with.... IF the truck is dead and needs to be towed. If I recall, it is an Orange strap of some sort.

I don't recall seeing any lever behind the panel above the parking brake release.
