"It's not the color I asked for but I like it"
My wife heads a team that handles the investments and accounts for a owner of a conglomerate of dealerships. He told me where to go and who to see for my new truck. I met with the dealership's manager and he put me on a sales guy and told him, "Sandy sent this fellow here to buy a new truck. Take care of him". I told him my budget, make, model, year, color, options and so on. Call me when you find what I want. He stated he had access to over 300 dealerships and would be getting me exactly what I was looking for.
Over the next 3 weeks I'm called to come see what the sales guy had found for me. None were what I had specified in our initial meeting. I was getting irritated and started looking at other dealerships. 3 months go by and I'm attending a holiday function my wife's work has put together for higher profile clients. I saw the owner of the dealership there and he asked how I liked my new truck. I explained what has transpired over the past few months. He was apologetic and assured me he would get to the bottom of the situation.
The following Monday I received a call from the manager of the dealership asking me if I can stop by to meet with him at my convenience. I made it to meet with him and he explained that people come in all the time telling him that the owner told them to come buy a vehicle. These people have run into the owner in public by chance. They don't have a somewhat personal tie to the owner like I had. 2 days later I get a text from the sales guy with a photo of a new 2020 1500 Bighorn 4x4 Granite + Night Edition, leveled, upgraded wheels, Nitto Ridge Grapplers yadda yadda yadda for exactly what I said I wanted to spend. I wanted Black. It was a different color but the price was what I had stated. I went to see the truck anyway.
When I got to the dealership I was handled VIP style. The sales guy said he was going to grab the key fob and we could go for a ride. We walked outside and he clicked the fob, I heard the horn and saw a new 2020 black 1500 Bighorn 4x4 across the lot. I said "NOPE!" Then proceeded to show the sales guy the text I received with the Granite colored Bighorn and it was right beside us, about 150 feet away. He said that was a mistake. Now I'm really pissed. I told him this was all a bunch of Bu11$hit. He said there was no way to let me have the Granite colored truck for what I wanted to spend. It was loaded with options, been leveled, upgraded Mopar wheels, Nitto Ridge Grapplers, Bedliner yadda yadda yadda. I told him I didn't give a $h!t just make it happen. I left. 30 minutes later I was back to test drive the 'mistake'. The paperwork was processed and ready for me to sign the next day. I signed, stroked a check for what I intended to pay and drove off with a truck that was listed almost $18K more than what I had set MY price to be.
I saw the owner a couple of months later and he asked me how I liked my new truck. I told him that I did indeed like the truck. He told me I damn well better be happy with the deal I got. We laughed, shook hands and had a drink. It ended well for me, but I'm not sure what all may have happened at the dealership?
