2016 RAM 1500 8 spd quad cab. Sticker says 40 psi. I currently have Nokian HT Ones which take 51 psi -- TPMS is NOT tripped; however, these tires seem to heat up and squat too much when towing 7,000 lb trailer, causing my MPG to decrease. Thinking of replacing with LT tires which take up to 80 psi. What max pressure will trip the TPMS?

Towing heavy with a 1/2 ton? You need Load Range D or E tire, will be rough ride unloaded or no trailer though. MPG is going to take a hit hauling or towing heavy, especially with a gasser. Concur with above post. TPMS alerts when tire PSI hits the threshold (min PSI) programed for factory tires or replacements, assuming they ae the same spec as OE tire that came on it. Is 51 psi what's on tire sidewall, or are you running what's on tire placard on door jam?

XL is all that you need for towing, if you want air them up to 50 psi cold.

How much of an increase in tire pressure are you getting from cold to hot?

Those might just be a soft tire also. The Michelin Defenders in the E-load are also pretty soft, so they will squat a bit but ride pretty nicely even when aired up.

If you're towing a heavy trailer a lot then yes upgrade your tires. If you tow once in awhile then raise the pressure to the max psi on the tire. When not towing use the door psi

If you raise the tire pressure to the maximum PSI listed on the tire, you risk tire failure as the PSI increases above the maximum inflation pressure, when the tires get hot from driving (as tire pressure increases when the vehicle is driven - especially in hot weather).

The max psi on the side of a tire is "cold psi", the manuafacturers take that in to account for the heat-up of the tire, it is not a risk.

You also generally get less of a heat pressure increase when near max cold inflation vs. 10-20 psi below max cold inflation.
At least that's what I have observed.

The tires are usually marked with "cold" max pressure.
