Any reason not to buy an earlier 2500, vs the later 2014+? I know the later trucks are great, and they got the 6.4L motor. I'm mostly looking at gas trucks.

for starters, the interior is the biggest change, going to the larger 8.4 inch Uconnect, which is hands down best on the truck market IMO. on top of that, you have 6.4 hemi available, which is again my favorite gasser in the HD segment, having drove the 6.0 before and feeling it underpowered for its application. theres some smaller quirks, like the power wagon getting the 4.10 axel ratio over the 4.56 or the MDS in the 6.4 hemi. alot of info to be had.

I've never driven a pre 2014 but I believe the steering has been significantly improved for performance and feel.

I'm not sure when they did it, but they switched to coil spring rear on the 2500s around 2014. That's a huge difference

There are LOTS of changes from 2013 to 2014 in the 2500. There is nothing wrong with a 2013 or older truck... but I would pay a lot more for a 2014 than a 2013 to get all of those improvements.

2014 got the redesigned frame that should hopefully solve the front end issues that have plagued the Ram trucks for a long time.
2014 got the coil springs which ride very well, surprisingly well, in my opinion.
2014 got the 6.4 Hemi option.

I'm sure there are other differences, but I honestly focused on the redesigned frame when I did my research. My opinion would be to be open to the frame vs old frame... but I would only take the old frame if it was substantially less expensive. The upgrades of the 2014+ are too great to pay the same money for an older one.

spoon059 summed it up well. There are some significant differences in the 2014+ trucks that include the 6.4L, a super nice interior and a suspension that simply doesn't feel like it's an HD truck.

I think the larger 11.5 inch (292 mm) rear axles became standard on all SRW trucks in 2014 as well. I believe all non-diesel 2013 and below only had the 10.5 inch axle.

All you could want to know about 2014+ Ram HD (funny, I think the pic at top of the page is a 2013 2500 with rear leafs though):

2014-2017 Ram Heavy Duty pickups

I would spring for a 2014+. Its pretty much a different truck underneath the body and much improved vs 2013 and older.

Trust me, if I could go out and buy a new truck I would.

The bodies seem the same between the two, and I knew of the suspension changes also. I do feel like the newer trucks are better, and they should be. Just wandering if there were any other reasons to stay away from the earlier ones. Its looking like its an earlier 2500 or I'll have to get a 1500 money wise. Either way it should be a big improvement over my 2000 chevy 2500.

Look at the 2500hd tradesman like mine before you give up on a new truck. With discounts and incentives, you could probably buy a new truck for the same money you'd spend on one that's 3yrs old. They hold their value very well. It's worth your time to explore it. I love my 17 so far. So much more truck than the 15 Silverado 1500 i had. So many things about the Chevy i didn't like

Actually it looks like 2013 was the first year of the new frame and front suspension:

2013 Ram Heavy Duty Pickup Trucks: Ram 2500 and 3500

So that opens up your options a little. You just can't get the 6.4L or rear coil suspension until you move to 2014+ trucks. Hope that helps
2013 was the first year for the 3500 trucks. 2500 trucks didn't get the new frame until the following year, 2014 model year. A 2013 2500 still has the older frame. Nothing wrong with the older frame, but the newer one is substantially better.
