IS it just me or are cummins overpriced on Craiglist? Who in theere right mind would buy a 1997 cummins 12v with 228k miles, that is molested with mods for 22k, My 2013, with no molestation, 40k miles was 26k.... Its every year model, It could just be me but i would never spend over 17k on a truck that has been to the moon. 238k miles(i think).<----Generic statement, not referring to the truck above...

There were a couple that im shaking my head....
2006 w/ flatbed, rusted and dinged- 168k miles $27k
2001 pretty clean except had 5th wheel and bed is rusted and didnt have a liner. 98k miles, $26k
1997 12v, with more mods and lift than anyone on this forum, thinking each mod adds precipitously more value, 228k miles, $22k

Idk if its a California thing, but that is ridiculous... These old rust buckets are more than brand new cars....

Here too. In the market for an older diesel now. KBB books for 13 and dealers ask 18. People pay it though. It's crazy!! Nada prices them significantly higher than kbb. It's not just Cummins. Most pre emissions regulations <2007 hold their value well except for the 6.0 power strokes around here. 7.3 power strokes are ridiculous at times. Best motor ever is what people will tell you.

Ever since ARB and CARB implemented smog checks in california in 2010 these trucks that don't use DEF, don't have all the crazy smog garbage or are exempt from the smog check - 1998 and older, the value has gone through the roof. that and the diesel fanboy that buys them to be cool buy their fanboy kit of a huge stack, 22x14's with 33" wheels, and truck nuts and window badges that think rolling coal is cool they push the price up cause are more about the image than spending 20% interest on a used overpriced truck

I bought my 07 cummins Bighorn new for 31k (24k off sticker) even with 150k on the ticker I see trucks like it sell for 24-28k.... thats a pretty good investment to only loose 3k off sticker, 3k from tax and regi, and about 10k in mods on a 9 year old truck... should have never let it go.

I was just thinking this same thing earlier this week. You would have to be insane to pay over $20k of your hard earned dollars on a 1997 Ram with that mileage. Often when I'm bored I look at used trucks/cars online and it kills me how expensive used HD trucks are. Dealers are trying to sell trucks with 150-200k and cosmetically (at least) are a mess- for amounts of money you could almost buy a new one for. Most of them have mods as the OP mentioned. Even for the newer trucks (like 2010-2013) I'd rather just buy a lesser trim new than a loaded used trim with 130 thousand miles on it. I saw a 2500 Laramie (I think a 2011) with a Cummins. Dealer wanted $45 for it. Do people actually spend $45k on a 6 year old truck with over 100k on it just because it's a Laramie and has a Cummins? You dont really have any idea what the previous owner(s) have done to it. And that is a TON of money. Another vehicle that is like this is the Tahoe/Suburban. Tons of owners, high miles, $20-$30k. And it wouldnt surprise me if most of the dealers are giving people jack **** when they trade it in. Then they go and list it for the moon.

I really want a Cummins but I can't find one that is not ragged or over priced. I wish I could afford new.

97 is one of the most desired years for that truck.

Mechanical tuning, no emission crap, and a very solid built motor.

The newer diesels tend to have more problems because of all the emissions and electronics. And if you look at the price of diesel repair in general and then add the new diesels to it, I need a second mortgage to fix.

I got out of the diesel game since I don't use my truck to make money. My 07 F 350 replacement long block was 14k. High pressure fuel pump , 5K.

If its a 12V or a pre DEF/EGR ****** with the exemption of the horrible VP44 trucks, then these idiots try to sell them for 2-3x what they are worth. It's absolutely ridiculous. I love the old faithful 12v but I will NEVER pay the asking price these kids are selling them for. Look at a 1998 (not 98.5) Cummins Auto 4x4 club cab That apparently is the Holy grail for 12V trucks and they are priced gouged tremendously.

haha i picked up an 04 6.0, i loved the truck but then it needed to be repaired and was gunna cost me 7.8k.... No thanks.

I almost bought a 1998 12v, for $9K back in 11-12, but parents wouldnt help me at the time because they thought it was stupod to by a truck with 198k miles, condition was ok, but it was forest green =/

My parents "financed" my first 2 trucks, ford was off the 2nd truck when i sold it, the bank for my current.

Every once in a while you fill find a very clean 97-98 for reasonable cost, and of those its broken down into two categories, Lemons, or old people who dont know the value... you want the old people, cause there low mileage, not abused, clean, and taken care of.

I usually consider the mileage for any diesel to be half of the mileage of what a gas vehicle would have. 198k miles on a diesel isn't that bad. I had a 2001 Lincoln Town Car Executive series that had 546k miles before I sold it. It burned a little bit of oil and had a small oil leak from the front main seal but still drove fine and got 22mpg. Now for 60 Ford Diesels, I would steer clear of those LMAO.

I wish i got the 98, but ended up getting a 2004, ram 4.7, very good truck, put 30-40k on it, never had any real issues except bad LSD.

Diesel HD trucks have always been expensive, nothing new there.
