Is this really still an issue?

So I received my 2016 about 2 months ago and within the last month I noticed a clunk resonating from the floorboard and through the steering column. What really made me notice this was driving on a gravel/rutted road. Looking at the intermediate steering shaft while jiggling the steering wheel around exhibits the same noise I am hearing and feeling while driving.

My 2014 that I had had a similar issue where they replaced the intermediate steering shaft. Any one else have this issue on similar driving conditions (gravel/rutted road)? If so I don't see why this is still an issue with Ram, you would think they would have corrected it.

******UPDATE******
Truck went back in to the dealer today. Got the call this afternoon that both the steering rack and intermediate steering shaft are going to be replaced. Unfortunately, both parts are on back order. Now I know back orders can happen for several reasons but as with my 2014 it seems this may be a more prevalent issue.

I've noticed the same thing on my 2015. I can feel a clunk through the column while slow speed turning. It's hard to reproduce so I've not taken it to the dealer yet. I'd like to know if this is a known issue that should be covered by warranty.

If there are issues with the steering column, they would be covered under the basic 3/36 warranty. If anyone needs assistance making a service appointment, please feel free to reach out.

It should be covered under warranty it's just trying to figure out what is causing it. Like I mentioned I feel like it's more steering related so maybe the rack or intermediate shaft. I notice it more over rail road crossings, washboard/rutted, and gravel roads.

I have the same issue. If you lock the steering wheel in place and push up on the wheel it will make the clunking sound. I also noticed it while riding in our back field one day.

They didn't want to cover mine on my 2012. So I learned to live with it.

Clunk when I let off brakes sometimes in stop go traffic. Since new.

Sent from my LG-H901

Is it more of a clunk with the brakes or transmission?

I mean I get there's going to be suspension noise on a truck but to have it feel/sound the way it does over some roads is kind of ridiculous. I've had a 2012 which was next to perfect, a 2014 with something always clunking in the suspension/steering, a 2015 that drove great (Except for the paint which is why it was bought back), and now a 2016 that only drives good over certain types of roads.

I think with mine it's drive line slack related. it's been mentioned all the time on forums, almost feels as if someone rear ended you slightly.

Coming from the Automotive world, I am just starting to notice this on my 14' I picked up in October. I will investigate this weekend. GM's used to do this constantly, and the knock sensation was actually the I-Shaft; it telescopes and the knocking sensation were the inner and outer tube making contact. There was a service bulletin about removing the shaft, repacking it with white grease, exercising it and packing it again then re-installing. It would last for a short time til the grease worked its way out... They eventually starting replacing them, however I didn't see any design changes. If they thought the grease coming out was an issue you would've thought they would implement a seal similar to a motorcycle fork seal to hold it in. Hoping to spend some time with this over the weekend and if it changes anything I will report back.

I too have had this before. Typically only on slow turns (under 7 mph) and usually fairly tight as well. On my 14' Lonestar and my 16' Sport.

It would happen very regularly (I always would hear it when going up to the 4th floor in my parking garage) but it would not happen on every turn.

I could feel the actual vibration clunk through the brake pedal and steering wheel. I was never on the brakes when I felt it but rather covering the brake (not putting any pressure on it to activate the brakes though.)

my 2012 had the same issue. progressively got worse. the dealer replaced the rack (twice) and steering shaft which fixed the truck for about a month before i started to feel it again. ended up selling the truck and buying a 2500. no more clunking. probably not the answer you want to hear but i lost all confidence in the 1500's steering after that.

So is it just a bad design? and is the 2500 that much different?

I think this is the problem I am having.

Express and update on this?

So, it turns out the rack they ordered showed up damaged, which they are obviously requesting a new part. With it having been back ordered in the first place I don't know when it will be in. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to get an update.

I have this problem with my 2012. I only ever notice it coming into my driveway or definitely noticeable going over cattle guards. It's weird this issue is also in the Toyota world. My old tacoma had this same problem.

no clue. 2500 steering is totally different.

I took my 2014 CC in for this issue 2 times in the last month and my dealer says they test drove it and heard the noise once but don't know what it is. They checked the steering shaft and front end and all is good. Just picked truck up sat from having it checked again and they say all is good. I've had lots of trucks and never had anything like this before. Truck has 24,000 miles. This is my first Ram and love everything about the truck but this. Just bugs me I guess cuz something is not right.

That's exactly how I feel about it. I don't know why it's so random between trucks.
