Help!

2010 ram 1500 quad cab 5.7 hemi. Bighorn 100k miles.

To start off I love this truck. Bought it from a used car dealership last month. No sign of rust, engine is clean enough to eat off of.

One week after I got it, I took a left turn going approximately 5mph and the truck shut off. I was in the middle of an intersection with no power my oil light on and my steering locked. I threw it into neutral and it fired right up with no issues, like nothing ever happened. I assumed that maybe my keyring was too heavy so I took AFF all the other keys, and used only the fob.

Same thing happened a week later. Another left turn, and the oil light. Checked oil temp/pressure/levels and all were fine. Took it to the dealer where they "fixed it". Bad abs sensor.

Now today it did it again. I have no clue where to look and neither does the dealership when I called them. It's past the 30 days but where it's the same problem I've been dealing with its on them to fix. I'm taking the truck back tomorrow but I'd like to hear what you guys think. My family is in the truck a lot and this could put me in a very dangerous situation. Any feedback is appreciated.

well there is the first solution, don't make left turns <facepalm>...lol
If the truck hasn't had a full tune up(plugs, fuel filter, etc), start there. Run some fuel injector cleaner or have the injectors cleaned. Make sure the battery is good and terminals are clean. After that, I would suspect loose wiring and/or connectors are loose, corrosion, or damaged.

A bad abs sensor won't shut off a truck or turn on an oil light. The oil light may just be on when it quits because the key is on but the truck isn't running so it is sensing no oil pressure. The steering doesn't lock when it quits it is just really hard to turn because without the truck running you don't have power steering. Otherwise, every time a vehicle quit it would keep going in the direction the wheels were pointed when it quit. There is obviously something else wrong. Just wondering, is this a Ram dealer or privately owned?

They thought it was the abs sensor because of my service 4wd, Trac control, abs, and Ebs lights kept popping on. The abs sensor fixed all of that but the grouped this separate symptom with it. I bought it from a used car dealership. The steering wheel completely locks in place. It's more than no power steering, when it shuts off I have to coast to safety in Wich ever direction the wheels r facing I'll I can throw it into neutral to start. I've tried switching it off while moving but the oil light doesn't come on then.

Lol if only turning right was practical. I'll try the tune up after I see what the dealership says. But the truck runs so smooth and has tons of power that's why I was leaning towards a bad sensor?

Just shutting down would imply ignition to me. Lack of fuel would cause rough running and stumbling around before finally turning off. I wouldn't imagine a vacuum leak causing this type of issue.
Have you tried to see if there are any stored codes?
I know my heavy duty equipment at work has different stages of malfunctions. Some simply notify the operator while others shut down the diesel. Do our trucks have the ability to shut down the engine if it senses a 'catastrophic' problem? I'd imagine something of that nature would spit a code and your CEL would remain on.

Hi Rg-offroad,

Sorry to hear about this! I'd be happy to follow up with your dealership for you if needed, just PM our page with your VIN and let me know.

His dealer is Honest Joes buy here pay here and I don't think they deal with Ramcares. I hope its not a flood damaged truck they put back together. The multiple electrical issues make it sound like one. The private used lots buy the insurance auction stuff and the trade ins the dealer doesn't want. You would be amazed at what can sell as having a clean title at the auctions.

ignition, that is why you aren't throwing a code. Usually with ignition problems the truck thinks you turned it off. Something in your ignition system is whack, heard of this a couple times here, do a search. Nothing else would lock your steering that I know of. I can't believe the mechanic changed the abs sensor if you told them the steering locked.

I really hope not. I live in Maine and they bought the truck from auction in Massachusetts. The truck seems emaculat with all original paint on the frame Wich here in Maine is a big deal where rust is always an issue. My guess is a chaffed wire or bad ground in the steering column causing it shut off only on left turns.

I had this once on my cars,
check if a chafed cable is making contact with the steering column or if it can swing to the right to make contact and a short on something else.
