Hello,

Let me first introduce myself. My name is Matt and I am a BRAND NEW Ram owner. I bought a 2013 Ram 1500 4WD Big Horn with the 5.7 Hemi and 3.55 Rear Axle Ratio.

I have a question about the break-in period and fuel economy in extreme cold.

I seem to be getting about 12 MPG city and maybe 14 hwy at 60 mph. I live in North Dakota so the temperatures are around o degrees right now. Can I expect my mileage to improve after the truck "breaks in"? Does the extreme cold impact mileage? Any information you can provide is very helpful.

Thank you!!

Normally I average around 15 - 15.5 but it's been in the teens for the last week here in PA and I've been getting low 14"s. By the way, welcome to the forum.

Thank you, I'm glad to be here!!! I will keep an eye on the mileage as I go and see how it changes in the warmer weather. (not that I bought my truck for good mileage lol)

I just bought my 12' bighorn a few months ago, i also was getting about the same mileage you are now.
I just turned 3000 miles and now I am avg 16.7
give it some time and it will get better.
im doing my first oil change tomorrow and I am hoping that switching to Mobil 1 will make a small improvment

Oh good...16.7 sounds MUCH better! Hopefully I reach that after the break-in period is over.

You probably won't see much change in city mileage but highway mileage should go up
My dads 11 has averaged 19-21 mpg on a few different road trips

It'll improve over time as the engine breaks-in. The winter fuel blend isn't helping either.

I want to say once my truck got close to 3k miles is when my mpg leveled out and I was averaging 15.5 city and up to 20 highway. But now that I'm modded....numbers dropped about 1.8 mpg, lol.

The cold will definitely affect it pretty good and once it starts to warm back up, it should jump up nicely. I usually average 14.5-ish but for the last 3 tanks I was between 12.8 and 13.3. Same driving style with all tanks too. But now that it's hitting back up to the 60's, I'm reaching back towards 15 this tank.

And with yours being a 2013, yours should end up being more efficient than ours.

I just bought a new 2012 HEMI 4x4. I live in North Ga the temps here are from mid 20s to the upper 40s im averaging about 15.2 mixed hwy and mountain roads. I would guess the cold weather is hurting you some.

If you run E10 fuel, you'll show lower MPG as well. Winter fuel and cold weather really hammers on my G8's MPG. I go from almost 23 in the summer to high 18's or low 19's in the winter. I always run E10 93 octane from Shell and my route is almost always the same.
