Since winter came, my 2016 2500 4x4 Crew Long bed 6.4 is barely getting over 9mpg city. In the winter, I drive much less on the freeway. My work is around 9 miles one way. Typical speed is around 40-50 mph. I've been resetting the computer each time to see if the next full tank improves. Is it really supposed to be this bad in city driving? I'm not using 4 wheel drive and I'm not a lead footed driver. I don't get it. I have just over 11,000 miles on it. I've been on freeway trips, unloaded, getting around 15mpg during the summer. Is this typical or should I get this to the shop? Other than mpg, the engine runs great.

Winter blend (ethanol) kills the MPG on these trucks as does short trips, stop/go driving and idling in traffic. I'm constantly amazed at how great the MPGs with my 6.4 Hemi are on the highway in the summer for a gas motor. Other side of the coin - like you I'm dismayed at how poor it can be in the winter doing start/stop and sitting in traffic.

8-9 is pretty bad but not totally unheard of in really bad conditions.

I was thinking it could be ethanol blends. I was going to try to find a station without blending and see if it is better.

It's not going to get decent mileage till it's completely warmed up either, 9 miles probably isn't getting it there in near / below freezing temps..

Holly cow, make sure you are not pulling another Ram with It's wheels off.
I'm getting 17/18 in central Illinois, I drive 60 MPH, 25 miles to work and then back.
I now feal astatic.

Winter fuel has more oxygenating components for better cold starts, but less MPG. Also if you are idling up you are getting 0mpg. During warm up I think the trucks run rich to warm up faster. If it's super cold, lubricants and grease aren't as fluid and mean it's just that much less easy to move. Snow isn't as easy to roll over as hard pavement. If you are avoiding the freeway now you won't be using MDS as often, if at all.

Lots of factors. All maybe small individually but together they add up.

You are driving a 1/2T 5.7 and slow freeway speeds. You better be getting at least 17/18. Not a HD 6.4 through the city.

I have been getting around the same mileage too. 9-11. My trip to work is short. I only let my truck idle while I'm scraping the windshield. If I drive straight to work and don't have to take my kid to daycare, my truck never reaches operating temp. That'll kill your mileage.

My city driving just about the same as you is betting my 14 with 19k 12.2 on winter blend, was getting 13 in December before we got winter blend in Charlotte. Yes, I asked several gas stations. I have a pretty heavy foot. I'd probably guess, based on a couple oil reports I've seen posted our trucks aren't broke in yet but at same time I wouldn't be surprised to see those types of mileage given the short trips. When I drove to Pittsburgh last weekend my mileage dropped on highway at 80 mph through mountains from 14.6 to 12.7 just cause winter blend. I've seen quite a few threads about how bad winter blend is for the 6.4 so I'd chalk all the above as the issue. Plus, cold air is more dense requires more fuel, so you've got numerous reasons for the results

Yeah, you are driving 25 miles a day at 60 on the freeway. He doesn't drive the freeway as much in the winter, i.e. Through the city. You have a 1500 5.7, he has HD 6.4. Comparing apples to oranges.

My commute is 9 miles round trip lol. And winter mpg is sitting at 8.9 with 35s and 4.10s. Took a 200mi trip on the highway last week, doing 65-70 got 15mpg. It's the winter gas and short commute in my opinion. And I have a condition where my foot gets heavy when I see a Ford or Chevy in the next lane [emoji848]

This is enough right here for me to talk me out of anything bigger than my 1500/5.7 when I think I need more truck.
Sir, I truly feel for you.

No need to worry. It's normal for your truck.

I just got 9.8 MPG on my last tank.

Hey guys.. Yeah I've noticed low mpgs right now on my 2016 ram 1500 5.7 hemi .. Avg 13 mpg city driving and 10-12 mpg freeway.. I've got a 3 inch level kit running 305/55/ 20 nitto trail grapplers 20x12 moto metal 962 wheels.. I'm guessing that's normal.. Never got a chance to see what it averaged with the stock 17s..
