In Alberta a 2500 is actually cheaper to insure that a 1500. Plates cost the same.
Considering the price difference (2500 more than 1500) how could that be? Insuring a more expensive truck is less than a less expensive truck?

Funny enough, I asked my agent the same question. Her answer was 2500s get stolen less and are involved in a lot less accidents.

So, part of the math is:
When does the 2500 lower ins/lower mpg EQUAL the 1500 higher ins/higher mpg (this omits things like depreciation)

Really, the OP's question is a math problem and MPG is only a part.

I appreciate everyone’s thorough answers to my original question. Obviously I’m looking at all aspects of buying a new(bigger) truck. MPG is a factor for and for as the question I had. This just reaffirms what I thought the 2500 would get.

In a nutshell, no one buys a 2500 for the gas mileage. Most people buy them for the horse power, payload, and towing capacity. That's the only reason I bought mine.

I had a '17 Power Wagon with 4.10's. Driving back and forth to work (about 50 miles round trip) on 55 mph rural highways, I'd average close to 16 mpg. Expressway was about 13.5 doing 75, maybe 14 doing 70. In town...I won't go there, suffice to say it was terrible.
22' power wagon

I love the truck and I drive it for fun - 10mpg combined.

I dont know if the previous owner turned off MDS or something stupid like that

16 Power Wagon with big ol snot knocker STT Pro tires. Just made a trip from NC to Northern Michigan. If I keep it under 70 on flat land I get 14.5 by the computer. At 55 I was getting as high as 15.
Kicking around local it stays around 12.5-14 depending on what I'm doing.
If I run over 70 it drops to 9 pretty quick.
Good news is with a HEAVY load at 55 I still get 14-15.

2016 2500 Loaded 4x4 6.4 4.10 gears, 1.5" leveling lift and Boss plow frame. usually around 16 around town. 300 mile trip 1 month ago got 19.3. The key is to drive the speed limit, not 5-10 over.

2016 4x4 Sport 5.7, 3.21 gears. 20-22 on the highway. Not sure around town.

2022 4x4 Warlock 5.7, 3.92 gears, topper. Load E tires, 2" lift in front. Gets about 16 in combined town and highway. Still has less than 3000 miles on it so might get better.

I have a 2019 2500 Mega Cab and we usually see between 19 & 21 on the highway running 70-80 mph. Somewhere around 15 in town.

Fuelly says the 2500 with 6.4 gets about 12mpg. My new 1500 Laramie 4x4 is only getting 16 with about 2500 miles. That’s the computer so it might be worse. I drive like a grandpa. Love the truck though.

I know this has been asked a million times. What are people getting for MPGs in your 2500s with the 6.4? Not interested in towing numbers, just normal highway and city numbers. I'm really on the fence between a 2500 and 1500 and it really comes down to weekly cost of driving for me. We drive a lot out of state on highways and rural roads. Right now I have a 2015 1500 with 154k miles and I've been consistently getting 17-20 mpg on our trips. I'm curious how much of a hit I would take at the pump if I go to a 2500.

Thank you in advance, sorry for the redundant topic...lol
Why do want a heavy duty truck unless you’re towing/hauling in excess of five thousand or so pounds on a regular basis?

First - why not? Better ground clearance without a lift, solid front axle, stronger gear sets. Depending on where you're living, these are things you definitely need to consider that don't have anything to do with towing.
Second, as he said I think in his first post, it's cheaper to insure for him.

There's plenty of other reasons to own a big truck that don't have anything to do with towing. I had a PowerWagon for 5 years, and now I've got a CTD. Before the Wagon I had 2 different F350s, an F250, an older Ram 2500, and a GMC 2500. I've never owned a half ton truck, and I don't regularly pull anything at all. I do OWN trailers that weigh over 5k lbs, and depending on the year I might pull them once to 10 times a year.

I recently traveled too and from florida in my 2016 power wagon and according to evic was getting 16 mpg. It was probably closer to 15 realistically. It has 1.5" level kit on it and 35" tires. I set the cruised at 70-73 mph and if I went above 75 the mileage would start to creep down a bit.

You buy a 2500 or 3500 based on the job you need it to do. If you don't tow or haul anything that benefits from an HD truck, then it's a waste of money to buy one. If you do tow or haul something that benefits from an HD truck, then it's a waste of money to buy a 1500 ;)
