I'm going to change my gear ratio but want to keep a quiet smooth ride. Which brand gear offers that, I've seen Dorman, Motive, Yokon, Richmond and a few others for under $300 while the OEM is over $600. Recommendations? Hoping to save some cash since I'll be putting in a TrueTrac at the same time.

This has more to do with how they are installed than the brand used. I have seen guys complain of gear whine with Yukons that cost almost $400 where others had no problem with cheaper Motive gears at only $200...and vice versa. Just make sure you take them to a reputable shop that has worked on the Ram 9.25 rear axle, and you will be fine.

Also, what gear ratio are you wanting to go with?

I've heard that the yukon and richmonds are cut a little different for strength purposes. Looking to put a 3.92 in to replace my 3.55. Feel like the 3.55's aren't really helping my mileage and miss the instant take off my last ram had. Was thinking of just going with the Dorman from Rock Auto since I have a credit from them screwing up some things in the past.

3.92 would be better than 3.55, but why not 4.10? I swapped from 3.55 to 4.10 and I absolutely love it. I used motive gears and had the dealer install everything.

Haven't ruled it out, had 3.92 in my last Ram and thought it was a good balance of fuel economy and performance. I'll have to see if I can find a calc to see what RPM's that puts me on the highway.

Gotcha. I run about 1700-1800 rpms at 60mph with just shy of a 35" tire. its not bad, I haven't seen too much of a mileage drop. I would say around 1mpg.

I've got 3.92 in my truck and like it but if I was going to do a swap I would swap to something lower not 3.92. Just don't think the 3.92 to 4.10 is worth the hassle.

I have a set of stock front and rear 3.92 I could sell you. Came out of an 05. Had 51K on them when they were removed and replaced with 4.56.

907Ram, how much did the dealership charge for the swap? Also are you 4wd, or 2?

I have a 4wd. I bought all parts which was around $1200, then paid $700 in labor, screaming deal. Plus we did it on a Saturday, so I got to help out, I've never done a gear swap before so it was great learning experience.

Just be advised that those won't work in the newer rear ends... The 05 didn't have ZF gears and it looks like the OP has a 2010 so he will need ZF gears...

2010 still has the Chrysler corporate 9.25" rear diff and 8.25" front diff; the ZF axles were used in 2011+

I picked up a Dorman 4.10 from RockAuto for $138 with a discount code. Not sure what happened as it showed 3 different prices over the few days I looked at it. Anyway not sick with some bug and then impatient so dropped it off at a local Jeep/Offroad shop that has a reputation for being very thorough. It's got a noise at around 50 that isn't like a gear whine that they said they've only ever heard one other time. The replaced the cheap pinion bearing from my Master kit with quality ones and it got better but still there. I'm going to put some miles on it and see what happens, he wants it back monday to tear down and reinspect if it's not better after a few hundred miles. Might be swapping for a Motive next to see if its somehow the gears.

Update: Dorman was a bad gear choice. Couldn't get rid of the whine, the shop tried different pinion depths and backlashes so they swapped out everything. The went with new bearings and went with a G2 ring and pinion that they like over Motive. Quiet as can factory now. They also noted that Yukon should be avoided as well for road applications. On a plus side the shop only charged me once for labor even though they opened the rear end up like 4 times. If anybody is in southeast TN I'd definitely recommend Scorpion Offroad in Cleveland TN. I normally do all my own work this is the first shop I've ran across in years that I would trust.
