So, I got home today with a check engine light. Code was P0305, misfire on cylinder 5. Looked into it and noticed water level was low (I topped it off less than a week ago) and white vapor and water droplets coming from exhaust. Checked the oil, but it's not milky. Still I feel that it is a blown head gasket though. Also, mpg seems to have been terrible for the past few weeks. Just wanna see if I'm on the right track as well as how much it has cost for others to have it fixed.

Best way to see is to go to a shop or the stealership and have a "Block Test" done. They will mix a sample of your coolant with the test chemicals and it will tell ya if theres exhaust gases in your coolant. That will be a for sure way to find out if your head gaskets are bad.

I have a friend who does most of my repair work. He said he can start the fix in the morning and will replace the head gasket for $300. That's not a bad price is it?

For a full tear down, new gasket and rebuild... That's a great price imo

I'd be supplying the replacement parts and paying for the $30-$50 testing of the head at the machine shop. But I think its a great deal also. Anyone have an idea of how much the dealership would charge? Just curious.

Dealer will charge about 8 to 10 hrs labor(800 to 1000) labor plus parts. If no machine work is needed and that starts at about 300.

Well you'd pay 100 bucks for diagnosis and at 6.6 hours you're looking at 760 plus tax and that isn't including have the head checked for signs of warping and to make adjustments.
