I know this sounds like a ******* question but what exactly does overdrive do and what's the best time to have it off?

Long steep grades, if It keeps jumping in and out then you can just turn it off till over the grade.

O/D is a gear set in the transmission that spins the axles faster than the engine is actually spinning but you have lower torque output. O/D is basically a highway gear for better fuel economy and to reduce load on the engine which is why you can be cruising at 70mph and the engine is sitting at 1400rpm but jumps up to 2500rpm when you turn off O/D. Final drive ratio in your 3rd gear is engine RPM x rear ratio since 3rd is a 1:1 ratio; 4th is a 0.75:1 (engine rpm/.75) x rear ratio, and 5th is 0.67:1 (engine rpm/.67) x rear ratio. If you're towing up hills or if you want to keep the full engine power all the time then turn O/D off. Lots of people hit the tow/haul when in the city so it doesn't activate MDS or go into O/D just so they have all the power.

I'd like to add to this if I may... if you have a 5.7 Hemi and rolling down the road how do I know if the cylinder deactivation (MDS) is activated is there supposed to be a light on or something???
