Somebody gimme the skinny on the exhaust brake.

Seems like sometimes it works and sometime it doesn't.

Truck is brand new under a thousand miles.

I notice under 35mph it never works.

Then sometimes over 50 it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Even when warmed up.

What your describing sounds very normal to me. It goes by the amount of exhaust back-pressure.

Your RPM has to be over 1200 I read somewhere for it to kick in

It also seems to be more effective with tow haul on I have found

There's a slide in the VGT turbo that makes it a nozzle and the engine a heat pump
It'll be more noticeable by downshift at higher RPMs then what the truck does on its own or in tow haul mode
I believe there is now three positions now instead of just on and off, if I remember right the third only engages it while braking instead of when you let off the accelerator

Thanks fellas.

I was wondering if I should take it to the dealer or what. Guess it is fine.

The RPM thing sounds about right.

If I goose it up to about 80mph and then let off it will slow me down 20mph or more, works really well.

I guess I'm used to an old school jake brake that worked all the time when you let off the throttle.

a jake brake functions way differently. holds the exhaust valve closed as the piston is coming up

When slowing from highway speed it works until appoximately 30 mph then kicks off.
At times when cruising around at slower speeds it works until 15 mph (sometimes).

Put a real load behind it and then you'll see how well the exhaust brake works.

It only comes on when the torque converter is locked.

It worked like a charm for me. Yes, it worked best with tow haul mode and with a load behind my truck. For me to get it to work, i had to be going at least 40mph then let off the throttle and tap on the brakes.
slowed my 11k lb load pretty freakin well. With tow haul mode on, the down shifts get aggressive with the exhaust brake. Love it!
