Great information Sir !

I've got about 1500 miles on my Mag-Hytec pan & Redline C+ , I plan @ 2k on the fluid to do a pan drain & refill with fresh REDLINE C + , in an attempt to get 100% c+ in my xsmn .

I'll likely do another drain & refill in another 2k .

How many times have you drained and refilled since your initial RL C+ service with the MH pan ?

I have done 2 drain and refills since my initial Redline C+ fill. Neither time did it make as much of a difference as the first time my trans got C+, it was more for my OCD. C+ is great fluid[emoji41]

Went on a 600 mile trip over the last few days and I am impressed by how cool my trans runs in 80+ degree heat at 70+mph. This is about where my temps hovered the whole time. This is about 7 or 8 degrees cooler than it has run in the summer on long trips before the MH pan and Redline C+.3ead177c69b85b33b631d141c9210d6b.jpg

I did notice that when I had the AC cranked up my trans temps creeped up to the high 140s but immediately came back down when I turned the AC off. I'm assuming this has to do with the trans cooler and AC condenser being an integral unit and the extra heat from the AC condenser is bleeding into the trans cooler.

If I was going to tow heavy in the summer I would definitely be looking for an auxiliary cooler and probably just bypass the factory cooler.

Did you remove the transmission thermal bypass valve from your truck?

Nope he installed a high capacity MAG-HYTEC pan with drain plug and serviced with Redline C+ ATF .
and he has the 6 speed which runs approx 50° cooler than the 8 speed as normal .

Hope this helps !

Absolutely, thank you. I've been following this thread since the beginning. it's one of my favorites lol.

It's been my observation that a 6 speed with TBV will typically run around 170-180* when at full operating temp. Perhaps not all 65RFE got the TBV?

The 65RFE run between 130 - 150 °
The 8 speed runs between 170 -200 °

A 65RFE truck equipped with the thermal bypass valve runs at approx 180* when at full operating temp. I've confirmed that with other local trucks and posts made by people with some authority on the subject.

We're going to have to agree to disagree :favorites13:

I'll say this : I'm not familiar with the TBV on the 6 speed xsmn /aka 65RFE , so you got me there Sir .

I'll also say this : the stock 6speed normally runs about 135° as mine has for the last 49,000 miles .
I've read many times the stock 8 speed xsmn normally runs @ 180°....

I wish my transmission ran at a lower temp. I actually added a cooler in series to the OEM unit without much of a change. This is the TBV on my truck:

I have never seen my trans go above 160. It was 160 once when I was towing about 4000lbs of lumber on a trailer in 80* heat. Other than that one time it hovers in the 130s in the summer and in the winter I'm lucky if it reaches 120. Never heard of a thermal valve or heat exchanger on a 5/6 speed.

I'm beginning to think that only the 6 speed trucks in colder climates got the TBV. Maybe a build with the block heater triggered the inclusion. I'll be removing mine shortly as I'm not happy with my trans temps while towing.

The TBV bypasses the OEM cooler up to a certain temp at which point it begins to open. It's apparently fully open at approx 180* and allows ATF to pass through the OEM cooler. Once it has cooled the ATF to a certain degree it again restricts or stops flow to the cooler.

Can you guys check to see if you have one of these on your trucks?

It's basically a less elaborate version of the system on the 8 speed trucks. I was told during a ride & drive a few years ago that they were installed purely as a carbon credit measure.

Are you sure you don't have the 8 speed xsmn ?

I believe I have this bypass valve and I believe it's normal operation.

If he has the 6 speed maybe the internal parts are incorrect or he has the wrong bypass valve ?

LOL

Come on man.

I wish I did
LOL , I had to ask .
Maybe you have the wrong TBV or your valve is stuck partially open all the time , or doesn't open till way too hot ?

Have you tried changing out your TBV or disassemble & clean it ?

My part # is correct for my truck. First thing I checked lol. The possibility that mine doesn't work properly is definitely.....possible.

Here's a quote from TransEngineer on another board:

"Normally, the trans should run 170-180°F at highway speeds, empty, level ground, with TCC locked. We consider 180°F to be normal operating temperature. If you run cooler than that (like 150-160°F), that is fine."

That quote is exactly what the 8 speed says .

And I stole it from TransEngineer addressing somebody with a 6 speed problem :) I have about 20 threads bookmarked.

Again, not trying to provoke a fight. Just trying to lay out what I have experienced. And I'm not the only one based on my research. It's semi-common with the 68RFE too since they share the same system.

To all , in an attempt to gain #s on the 2013 + 6 speed xsmn temps .
Please list your average temps of your 6 speed xsmn .

I'll start .

Winter = struggles to get to 125°

Summer = 135 - 140

Towing = my highest was 155°
