No complaints from me. There is enough power on tap (at least with stock tires) that I rarely need to give more than a 1/4 throttle to keep up with traffic.

I don't live in a hilly area though, and am never really in a hurry, so I could see why people are having an issue.

Said it before and saying it again.

FCA, put a beefed up ZF 8spd in this truck and you'll have the best HD gasser on the market.

My 17 does this exact same thing to a T.

Slight up hill grade, in a turn on a winding road. If i don't back out of it and then get back into it, it'll buck and surge until i crest the hill, then all is well.

The 2015 Silverado I had did this as well, but much worse and far worse shifting characteristics all around. The chevy was extremely hesitant to downshift unless i really got on it. I've heard similar things from ford owners.

It's all a big game to eek out the most fuel mileage they can from these trucks. We can blame the epa for forcing the fuel mileage standards upon the automakers and we get issues like this to deal with as a result.

My ram's Trans is notably better than the Silverados was all around, but it could certinly be better.

Heh, I had a Tahoe that was the same way. I know we bash the 6 speed in this truck but I like it a hell of a lot better than the 6 speed I had in that Tahoe. Even in stock form this truck was fairly responsive and shifts plenty smart enough for what I use it for. The shifts themselves are always very strong and smooth. The Pedal Commander just made everything much better though.

If they made a HD 8 speed with ratios specifically for the 6.4, and also upped the power of the 6.4 to 450/480 or something. ****, I would be so tempted to trade. But of course the truck will prob look ugly lol. Can never truly win.

The ZF 8 speed is a nice car/SUV transmission, not a HD transmission.

This coming from the guy who thinks the 5.7 is an HD motor and the 6.4 is not.

Meh. I'm good. I saw on TFL how the cooling system blew up when they ran the new Ford up the Ike. And according to you, the Ike tests are all that matters.

Edit: Wait for him to say how slow the Ram is up the Ike... It's his thing.

The original (and all subsequent) 5.7 motors have cast iron crank, light-duty powdered metal rods, cast pistons with thin ring lands and pressed pins, no oil cooler, no piston squirters. The truck and car motors are all the same in this regard. Just because it was used in trucks does not mean it was specifically designed as a heavy duty motor.

In comparison, the Ram 6.4 motor was specifically designed as an HD motor with all the supporting hardware. But I'm sure none of that was really necessary.

The 6.4 is just nothing but a pile. Didn't you know? Its been proven time and time again by TFL. Slow garbage. We should be banging our heads against the wall because we are driving it. Lmao.

And btw, regarding the ZF 8 speed.

The transmission can be used in a mild or full hybrid setup, and allows input torque up to 900 Nm, or 664 lb-ft (8HP90) — high enough for any Chrysler gasoline engine, not quite enough for the Cummins diesel.

https://www.allpar.com/mopar/transmissions/ZF8.html

So yes, it's every bit an HD transmission the 66RFE is, since the second '6' here designates the torque capacity. So either, a: you know more about this stuff than Allpar sources or b: you're talking out your a$$ as usual.

While that would be fun assuming HF could work out the programming, and I could figure out the harness changes, it's probably redundant. One of the insider resources (Redriderbob) on Allpar stated FCA is working with vendors on new transmissions for the next gen trucks. Whether it's the 8 speed or something else entirely it's very likely the 6 speed will be sunset.

If Whipple comes through I'm guessing the extra torque will make up for the 66RFE's lazy gearing. Only one way to find out:)

So why isn't the ZF 8 speed used in the HD's?? There is a reason....

All that technology in the 6.4, too bad it's only a few hp/tq #'s higher than the 5.7 in performance. But then it doesnt show with its performance on the IKE!!!

Did the 2500 5.7 with a 545rfe perform better than the almighty 6.**** when towing??

With respect to understanding that you are intellectually challenged I'll try to keep it simple. The ZF 8HP70 currently used in 1/2 ton trucks doesn't have the rated torque capacity or the incline hold capacity for HD trucks. The 8HP90 does have the necessary capacity (for gas trucks) as 900nm = 664 fb/lbs. I can only speculate on the reason FCA didn't release it; cost of re-certification after the 8HP90 was released.

What I do know is you are completely full of **** as usual. Trying so hard to be the smart guy in the crowd, and yet failing so spectacularly.
